It's finally sunny here on a Saturday, so H and the kids are out in the yard trying to tame the weed patch we're supposed to be seeding with a new lawn in three weeks. I have to get Kid 1 to archery lessons in 10 minutes so I'm choosing to hang on the couch and drink my tea since I didn't sleep well and accidentally overslept until 10:00. Whoops.
We were supposed to help my nephew with a school project today, but he and his little brother got sick and since my sister is starting chemo on Tuesday they can't be around her until they're not contagious anymore. So now their dad gets to do the project, and we're planless for the day (except for the yard).
ETA: re sports teams--one spring we accidentally signed DS 2 up for soccer in two different leagues. Total oversight on our part, and because one of the sign-ups happened in the fall we didn't realize he was supposed to be playing in that league until the season was almost over. What I couldn't believe when we realized it was that the coach never once reached out to us (and our phone numbers were correct in the league directory) to find out why he wasn't coming to practices or games. I'm sure it was a burden to his team to have one less player than they were supposed to, and if we'd known we would have done what we could to make it work.
DD is at dance all day for recital run through, so I decided to mow the lawn. Yard work is probably my most hated chore. I got about a third of the way done, stopped for water and now my mower wouldn't restart. It's a pretty cheap one I bought about 6 years ago, and it sat idle for a couple of years. I checked all the things I know how to check and they look fine. I hate dealing with the gas and oil, but couldn't justify replacing it while it still worked, so I started shopping for an electric mower.
I had a plug in electric mower when I lived in GA, it was a pain to avoid the cord, I liked it for our super small yard with thin grass, this lawn is somewhat bigger and the grass is really thick. Of course, now that I see a few I like, I go back out to give it one more go and it fires right up. I'm taking another break, so I guess I'll see if it keeps on going. I also need to weed whack along the edges, but I can't find the batteries and charger for the other lawn tools anywhere. I have no recollection of packing them when I sold my old house, I wonder if exh took the batteries and charger.
I was up ridiculously early this AM so I decided to be productive and run my errands. Came home and napped and now I'm being productive again with purging my closet.
I am at my state’s fair ground for a fun expo on technology & the arts. My teenager got tickets, so here we are.
Of course, I’ve been ditched.
As a registered voter, I was asked to sign a petition to get someone on the ballot to run for the U.S. Senate. Sure. Seems worthy. Then I checked them online and the candidate is opposed to nuclear war. How refreshing. Me, too.
I am so sick of IG accounts solely existing to sell their own products. I followed a lot of parenting and professional accounts that have converted to just selling their own courses and it's so stupid and annoying.
redheadk glad y’all are ok!! The rain was just relentless this week. Your area especially. So tired of these flood events.
Thank you! Our house is one of the highest points in the area so we've never even come close to flooding thankfully. It's crazy bc I saw a pic of our grocery store pop up on Grizzy's Hood News and people were losing it over the parking lot flooding but here we are all "hey, it can go up several more feet, HEB will probably make it!". One of the worst parts about it is that we have so many neighborhoods here but the news & even government sources can't keep them straight so getting info is really difficult. We basically just have massive text chains and it's all word of mouth.
Unfortunately, my stepbrother and his wife live much closer to lake conroe and already have 1.5 feet of water in their house. It's a one story, they got it completely packed up and cleared out Thursday, but she is pregnant, due in August. They have some good resources (my dad is a builder, his dad is an electrician) so they will be back in before the baby comes but how awful to be displaced in your 3rd trimester.

We just had L's birthday party, and it was so fun! We did it at a place that's a sort of childcare/cowork, and all the kids had a blast playing with the various areas and toys. It was a decent amount of work putting it all together (because I am a crazy person who did things like cut sandwiches into on-theme shapes and make a ton of cupcakes with multicolor swirl frosting), but we enjoyed the party itself. And, amazingly, most of the gifts are small and our style, so I don't have to move out of my house because it's been taken over by giant plastic toys!
My H and I went to get typhoid vaccines at CVS today, and were told they don't take insurance for them so they would be like $250 each. Does anyone actually pay that much for travel vaccines? Why is the US healthcare system so ridiculous? We are just trying to prevent getting sick and needing treatment, you would think that would be more affordable. We decided to skip and just go get breakfast out instead. I may call our doctor this week and see if she has any other ideas, but if not I guess we will just hope we don't get sick on our upcoming trip.
I am just finishing a pedicure and then going to run a few errands. I kind of hate getting my nails done, but I am sick of my heels cracking so I may start getting these more regularly. I got a bright pink which looks very summery. Too bad it is cold and rainy today!
It’s beautiful here so far but severe storms are coming later. Went to two plant sales this morning but ended up just grabbing a few more annuals from Lowe’s to complete our container pots this year. The sales mainly had perennials.
Now I’m sitting on the patio in the shade reading while H plants them lol.
Ugh @villianv I relate! We got an email this week saying our coach couldn’t finish the season. Not a big deal. They are volunteers and life happens. It’s not like coaching 6-7 year old boys soccer is the most important thing ever. Another dad said he will finish out the season which is just 2 practices and 2 games.
Well, we showed up for the game today and it was just DS and 1 other kid ☹️. I’m just frustrated because we said no to a play date and they ended up not really being able to play. They sorta practiced with the other team, but it was a total waste.
I ordered some of those samplize paint stickers. Last time they left sticky film, thankfully, we only stuck them partly.
This time I knew not to stick them too much, but I went to move one that was up maybe 2 days and it ripped part of the drywall. Ugh! I know builder paint isn’t great, but what kind of stickers are they using.
I am home with Covid. I was supposed to work yesterday, today, and tomorrow, but obviously, that was not a good idea. I am really happy I went to the doctor and got a note stating that she felt it best that I not be on the unit until Tuesday (this was before the test results were in, but to be safe). So, my absence is excused.
I paid off most of my credit card bill and will pay the small amount left when I get paid next. I need to figure out what I will have recurring and maybe just use my debit card or take out cash for my "fun stuff".
I had a fever for the first time in years and forgot 1) how shit it feels and 2) reminded that when single, it really sucks not having someone to help bring you things.

Yeah, when C was 6, his volunteer soccer coach ghosted the team halfway through the season. It was through Navy Youth Sports, and she was a young enlisted corpsman who I think was coaching to build volunteer time, which looks good for promotions. The parents stepped in and finished out the season, but seriously who does that to six-year-olds? The awkward part is she worked at the base clinic and I rant into her several times…
My check engine light came on out of nowhere yesterday and they just called to tell me what’s up. Um, it’s about a $4000 repair and they probably won’t be able to get to it until the end of the month. 😳 WTF?? I drive a 7 y/o Honda Odyssey with 80,000 miles on it. The good news is that I still have about 6 months of warranty left, and he’s “pretty sure” it’ll be covered. I should know more next week. Good thing DH works from home, I guess, as we’ll have to be creative with our car usage.

I’m sorry you’re sick!! How’s the job?!! Update!!!

Around here her chain of command would be notified immediately. It wouldn’t be tolerated at all. Wow.
I was up early for another tournament. I tied for last, and because it’s a tie, I am refusing to say it’s another DFL. Now I’m home, showered, Md sitting on the couch.
Low-key weekend planned. DS did a fantastic job on his band solo performance this afternoon, especially considering how little he practices lol. We promised to go to the local specialty ice cream shop after dinner to celebrate.
I can’t believe we’re only 3 weeks from summer break. The boys are swimming this afternoon but the heat triggered a migraine for me. Thankfully the aura didn’t linger and the numbness is starting to subside because this is not how I planned on spending my Saturday afternoon. I woke up this morning in a wonderful mood. A terrible situation at work is finally resolving after years and I can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel as of yesterday. My spirit feels so incredibly light today because of it.
I have a long list of house projects. SD21 moves out April 1. She had a room and living room area in the basement. Plan is to move Hs office down there, he doesn't WFH anymore so he doesn't spend as much time in there. Then I'm going to get his current room for MY office (WFH since 2014, and am not leaving this company unless they fire me). I had to pause on this to clean and do yard work for the last minute graduation party I did last weekend for SD22, but now it's on! I just prepped the basement room, came up for a snack and I'm about to paint. I can't wait to evict H from his office next weekend so I can start working on MY space!
Hoping to have it done by the end of the school year, I'm so excited to not have to work in the same room as DSs Fortnite battles!
Shopping with L for an 8th grade dance dress. The child, who refused to wear dresses for literally 7 straight years and has worn in my presence mostly free t shirts in size L and track pants now is like "ooh, look at this cute cropped shirt" and "I like fitted dresses." She wants a new look.
🤷🏻♀️
My daughter completely flipped her style once she started high school and I love it. She is super confident and looks great. My mom was a clothes stickler so I let my daughter wear whatever she likes (within reason). I hope she finds stuff she likes!!
Every day is a roller coaster. I saw my dad this morning and he was doing great and they talked about him coming home and having physical therapy visit or to rehab early next week. Either way, amazing news, he is still in overall poor cardiac health but can leave to go live alone, is doing well etc
I came home to have a celebratory doughnut and we got a call my FIL died.
Then my dad’s doctor called and said my dad is back in the ICU with a high heart rate that they aren’t having luck controlling.
None of this would be good at any time but why does it all have to happen all at once? My poor husband is here helping me with my dad and his dog (who goes to the sitter tomorrow!) and now his dad has died and we don’t know what is going on next. At least his mom is able to handle everything.
Woke up at 7ish and had an asthma attack 😫 cleaned myself up, did a breathing treatment and then fell back to sleep until noon. I really hope I can get some answers when I see my doctor on Tuesday.
My son’s regular season baseball ended yesterday, they are 23-1 overall going into playoffs. This team is so incredibly special.
In other baseball news, there are claims of a local powerhouse school that is accused of stealing signs and it has hit the press. I really hope something is done about it, there have been rumors for years but now there is proof. I understand that this is part of the game sometimes, but what are you teaching these kids if there isn’t some sort of punishment.
This cold rain can shove it. I washed all my thick, winter hoodies last week to put away for the season. And I tried, but I pulled one back out because my light sweat shirt was not enough.
This Saturday random brought to you by another Saturday at the soccer fields. I know we’ve had SO many discussions about youth sports….but it is SO frustrating when kids assigned to his team quit mid-season, or just don’t show up to games. I know that people have all kinds of reasons for why their kid misses games, and I’m sure many of them are good. But some kids have just stoped showing up completely, and when you have 11 kids assigned to a team, and four just stop coming, and you need 7 kids on the field, it gets really frustrating for the rest of the team.
This is why we are switching clubs for my older daughter. There were 16 kids on her team (U16). They could not get 11 to a game. There were two kids on the roster who we didn’t see once — not a single practice or game all season. Why sign up? It’s so jerky.
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”

Liking in solidarity. I know that being on a team is a big commitment, but it drives me crazy when kids don’t show up to practice and/or games and the parents don’t notify me. I sent out reminders and ask that parents let me know if they can’t make it, but every week we have a couple kids (always the same ones) who are no shows or show up 30 min into the game. Way to teach your kids about commitment and being part of a team.

No matter what I do, I seem to always have a single mosquito buzzing around in my room. If I manage to kill it (surprisingly difficult as they're tiny, fast, and I rarely feel them until I'm scratching a bite), the next night there's another. If I'm gone for a week plus, I can guarantee one within 24 hours. There's zero water source. I have a plug in mosquito killer, too. It's baffling.
Usually they don't feast on me, just whine in my ear when I try to sleep. I have 10 bites from the last hour.

I just got a few vaccines for travel (Kenya) and I paid nothing (Kaiser)
