I really am not sure why people rave about them, and I've gone back and forth on whether or not to buy one. I like that they contain several very pretty colors. However, my complaint about them is that some of the shades are so similar to one another, and they are all soooo brown.
I just bought TheBalm Nude Tude palette, which I think is a great alternative to the Naked palettes. The quality of the shadows is amazing - super smooth and buttery (except for just one of the shades), and they have fantastic pigment. I like the palette because it has some very pretty neutral shades, but there is enough variation in colors and it is not all brown.
Unfortunately, they don't carry it at Ulta or Sephora, but you can order it on TheBalm website, perfumania.com, or dermstore.com.
They're a good formulation eyeshadow (creamy, not a lot of fallout, good pigmentation), and the amount of eyeshadow in the kit is more than you get in regular sets.
I love the Naked palette. Yes, there are a lot of browns, but that is kind of the point. Some people have complained the colors are flattering, but I'm warmed toned and they all look fantastic on me.

I love both of my Naked Palettes as I can create so many looks with them for both night and day. Plus the shadows are pigmented perfectly (at least for me) that when used with my UD primer potion, they last all day/all night. I love coming home from work or a night out and looking in the mirror and seeing that as the rest of my makeup may have faded, my eye make up still looks great.
The colors all work fantastically for my skin tone, and it's idiot proof because all of the colors look great together. It's also a fantastic value, and very good quality.
I think the NP is all about quality and value to me. Its hard to beat the quality of UD e/s, its smooth and well pigmented. Some of the very glittery (not sparkly) shades have fall out, but that's about it. Personally, I prefer the original, but I like them both.
