My goals for this week: Apply to two internal and one external job (one down, two to go. All close today).
Networking happy hour on Thursday. Mostly internal folks, but a couple folks from an agency I'd like to work for, so I want to talk about their options.
I have an interview on Thursday, so I need to prep for that a bit more.
There is an internal position that I applied for almost 2 weeks ago. I'm debating on whether I should reach out to who I believe the hiring manager is (I have a professional relationship with them. If the manager isn't this person, then it would be their boss). I don't want to seem pushy, but I also want them to know that I am extremely interested.
I'm keeping my eyes open for other openings, but nothing is standing out to me so far.
I'm trying to get all my ducks in a row. I'm trying to use up my leave that won't be paid out. I'm trying to use the vision insurance that I have been paying for but not using. I'm trying to book all the appointments that I need to have so that I won't have to take time off from a new job.

i downloaded the LinkedIn job seeker app and over the weekend tapped the Girl Scout network in my area - someone is bound to know someone.
thx to the LIn app, i found a handful of positions i want to apply to. i don't meet ALL the request criteria for some of these positions but i can make the case that my experience and quick learning can compensate for that.
also i'll be checking in w/ my recruiter today and tomorrow checking back with the firm i interviewed w/ last tuesday.
the end goal is to have a position by the end of April !!!!
eta: Boo Hiss !! i just found out that i did NOT get the position in SF while it would have been awesome to work in the historic ferry building ... it would have been a daycare nightmare (i'd barely get to see dd PLUS i'd have to hire someone to pick her up from dc and stay w/ her til i got home around 7). it's not that i'm discouraged but being a single parent may prove to be a challenge with some of these more high profile (and higher paying) paralegal positions.
Well, after busting my ass doing the work of two attorneys in my assignment the last two months, I've been rewarded with being transferred out of my assignment.
I don't want this.
Guess it's that much more motivation to start really pulling things together for that other position.
@pinkdutchtupils - isn't there something in Lean In about how men apply when they meet 80% of the requirements, but women tend to wait until they have 100%. So go you for teaching for those "almost alls"!
steph96 - reach out! It will only help. Don't worry about seeming "pushy" and don't let people put those gender biased terms on you!

This is definitely a "Lean In" concept! Let us know how it goes for you!
I feel like this is my first "real" week at my job, after 60 days here. I'm in Training & Development, and I'm actually getting to teach a class this week! My presentation is on Wednesday!
We're also doing my 30 day review this afternoon, even though I'm at like day 64 today.
I think next week once some classes here wrap up, my supervisor and I will work more on putting some of my new plans and ideas into process. Having the past 60 days or so to learn and observe has been really nice, but I am itching to really start with my own ideas!

yes it is a Lean In thing ... i think if it works for the guys that if they don't meet ALL of the requirements they can still get the job then why can't I try that ?!? it's not like i've got all the time in the world to find the perfect position. i need something ASAP !!!
My goal for this week is to apply for 4 teaching jobs and work on a list of things that set me apart from other candidates (I always struggle with thighs is question in interviews).
Last week's goal was to request references from 3 new people, which I did successfully. I'm hoping these will help me make it into a FT teaching job next year.
I'm waiting on word from higher ups to see if I'll be getting the chance to attend a school later this year which will be 14 days and a definite promotion. I need to message my direct supervisor and see if there's word. I wouldn't have thought to do it without this thread!
Yay! That's kind of my hope. Remind us to reach out and go for it.

Hi! Can I join? This is right up my alley right now! I've been in my location for 15 years and my job for 7... And I need a change! My goal is a new job before the end of our fiscal year (10/31). My FI and I are both looking and open to relocating! Our wrinkle is that I'm currently the sole breadwinner, so if I get a job first it has to be the equivalent or higher of my current salary. If he gets a job first then I can work remotely at my current job until I find something. We're looking in 4 other cities besides our current one.
Actions this week: *followed up on a networking conversation from a conference last week *applied to a job in one of the other cities *updated my Indeed search to cover the other cities we decided to consider
I should probably post this separately, but could use some advice.
I've been reporting into someone one level above me, which is out of the norm here at my level (usually at my level you report into a director) for last 6 months. My understanding was that it was only temporary, to get me up to speed because I was new to this team, and after about 6 months in or so, I'd report into the director. It was not suggesting that they didn't think I was capable or anything. Based on my very positive feedback from managers, stating I'm "ready" for the next level (promotion), I've been pushing to understand how a promotion would happen for me, because of this out-of-the-norm reporting structure...Is it even possible for me to be promoted when I'm reporting into a manager 1 level up? Or, do I have to find a role at the next level on a different team? Well last week my manager announced he's leaving the company. I am going to be officially back-filling my manager so there's a win for me in that I'm now reporting into a director. But but there was ZERO mention of promotion involved. How do I go about talking to my NEW manager about this? Especially when just a couple weeks ago was pushing pretty hard about reporting structures, etc. And without making it awkward?
Boo! I got an email from a recruiter for a fantastic position I've always had in the back of my head to try for. Curse my current indentured servitude.
@stretchedad - I think that is the perfect chance to discuss promotions. Now that you will have increased responsibility, is there an increase in salary or position. Someone will have better words or ways to do that. I work for the gov't and we just don't get to negotiate like that too often, so it's not my sphere of knowledge. But yes, do it! You shouldn't be reporting to your peer on the org chart.

Woot !
Pays to keep in touch w attys you worked for eons ago I saw a CL listing for a secretary position at my old atty's new firm and I called her about the HR persons name - SCORE !! she called back not only w the name of the HR person but also some pointers about the ofc hiring in case I get an interview !!
This week: finish updating my LinkedIn profile and update my Careerbuilder resume. Apply for a job with a local big employer and reach out to my connections there.
Anyone have any recommendations for career books. I realize its a little late, but I need to work on a five year plan. Eventually I want to do consulting and I need to position myself to reach that goal.
Good: I have 2 follow on interviews for jobs I had phone screens with last week.
Bad: A job I was really interested in sent me a rejection letter. When I followed up on why they said I didn't show enough initiative in the company by downloading their mobile app. Their app is only available for iOS and I have Android. I explained this in my thank you note but apparently I should have purchased an iPhone to prepare for the interview.
Goal: Continue to apply for interesting positions. I had a backlog of positions to follow up on and sent out 10 resumes today.
I applied to 2 jobs. One was an exact fit for my experience.
The other was definitely a "lean in" scenario, but it was such an unusual mix of qualifications that I think I might have a shot, even with only meeting 80% of the requirements.
I want to remain part time, and with a short-ish commute, so im expecting that job hunting will take a while.
stretchad do you have a mentor at work informal or otherwise?
I always run things like that past my girlfriend and informal work mentor. She has double my experience with the company and she can tell me when to push or when something is a CLM.
At my company titles don't aways mean a promotion but sometimes they do. I would ask if the position is permanent and if there is an associated salary increase associated with the increased duties.
I do have a few mentors i definitely plan to reach out to about this situation...in fact, a couple of mentors have actually worked for my new manager. It's so weird though because no one else in my department has had this sort of reporting structure before, so there's just all kinds of weirdness that no one really knows how to handle.
Any goals for this week? The customer I work for has completely checked out. I'm not sure if he is burnt out or has other problems going on but he is doing literally no work at all. Shockingly, he is very honest about this. Most weeks, my goal is to support my projects and the people that are dependent upon him.
I started a new project this week and usually view that as an opportunity to meet additional members of management and grow the my network.
Jobs to apply for? I think I am going to apply for one this week. I would be extremely qualified technically but I don't want to live in the city that this start up is in and don't want to be an employee, just a contractor. (I would not apply to a big company with these restrictions but a start up might care less about this.)
Bad: A job I was really interested in sent me a rejection letter. When I followed up on why they said I didn't show enough initiative in the company by downloading their mobile app. Their app is only available for iOS and I have Android.
I'm tempted to do this re the SF firm that rejected me ... If anything to see if I present myself poorly

How do they know who does and does not download their app?
That is fucking weird and makes me think their heads are placed firmly up their own asses.
