For me… everything started with the realization that i couldn't stand most rude russian guys with their awful attitude to women and that i loved English language and that the best boyfriends i'd had somehow happened to be foreigners. That was the time when i went out on the Internet looking for people( not only guys) to communicate with to practice my English and may be to date. There was no thought about marriage in my mind. It was October, 2001. I wasn't serious about looking for my soul mate, i was 17, i just got into college, my real life had just began, so i wanted to simply correspond with somebody. I put my profile on one of the dating sites and in couple days when i came to check my mail i discovered 60 new messages in my mailbox. By the way i didn't have a computer (it used to be pretty hard to buy one in Russia, credit system didn't exist back then), so i was going to Internet-cafes to check my email. Every couple days i was coming to the cafe to check my email and sometimes i had no time to answer all emails in one day. Two months had passed… I'd been talking to couple guys on the phone, corresponding with some others, but i hadn't found the one i really-really liked! And i was actually ok with that. I had people to talk to on the phone (and practice my English) and had enough letters to answer. That winter i had my first exam session at the University and i was very nervous! Exams and school system in Russia are WAY WAY different from American ones. Here exams are a piece of cake. But back in Russia it was really hard. You had to study days and nights to get a lousy "B". Let's say there was no multiple answers quizes, which I think are the greatest cheats of all, cause you have 1:4 chance of getting it right:-) Oh no! Not Russian system. Oral exams, where teacher actually ask you a question without giving you any choices and you have to "speak" the answer in intelligent form and don't you dare take less than half an hour, they'll think you don't know what to say:-). Or a written exam, same as oral exam but on a piece of paper, so if you don't know the subject, you're screwed ( excuse me for my russian). Alright.. back to my story… Because i had to study for my exams, I stopped going to Internet cafes as often and answered all the letters with the same line: "I am very sorry , but i am having my exams this week and i won't be able to answer your letters however you can call me at…." It was easier for me to answer calls, then to spend 40 minutes getting to the Internet cafe, an hour there and then 40 minutes back during very cold Russian days. One of those days i got a letter from a very nice guy. His name was Andrew. He sent me two pictures and i really liked that he was 6'3 ft tall( i am 5'11 and i needed a tall guy). In his letter he said he was 32 years old, but somehow i remembered him being 23, probably because he looked really young. But.. you know… there were so many guys writing to me that i wasn't TOO excited about him… until he called me… Of course he got the same letter saying that i am too busy to go to the internet cafes and that he was invited to call me. Couple days later I got a phone call. I didn't fully realize it was him until i got [Image Can Not Be Found]to the Internet next day. The conversation on the phone was AMAZING!!! We'd talked for 2 hours. And that day we promised each other that we'll go skydiving together, because we both wanted it and never had done before. Pretty soon for a first conversation, isnt it? Well, at the end of the conversation we both felt like we had known each other forever. Of course, my good English skills helped:-) ha-ha! Also we decided to send each other a letter with 5 pictures the next day. Later Andrew confessed that he didn't believe i was real and was going to reply to his email ( because of my picture- on the left) and he was REALLY surprised to get an email that said "Call me." I know what you think… a little racy of a picture… but don't forget Europe is much easier on all this nudity stuff. They definitely would not have made such a big deal out of Janet Jackson boob (the nipple of which was covered anyway:-)
Part 2: The Wait
And here our story begins. For the first two weeks we were emailing each other and Andrew was calling me about every 3 days. After two weeks we decided that we missed each other too much and that we had to talk on the phone every other day. By that time Andrew had already found a very cheap phone card to Russia, so it didn't cost him that much to call me. We were falling in love with each other, we started talking about getting together. The funniest thing was that we both were feeling very strong feeling for each other but were too afraid to say the word "LOVE" , because we thought it was too early to be already in love. So we were saying such things as " Oh, i LIKE you so so so so so much!" and every day one more "so" would be added to the phrase. Finally one night I was sitting at the computer chatting with Andrew and there was something in the air, we just couldn't find words to express ourselves and" LIKE soo soo soo soo much" was not enough. We finished chatting and I went home where Andrew was supposed to give me a call. We both knew that it wasn't going to be a usual conversation. I got home and picked up the phone. I remember standing against the wall and listening to Drew. Then he said: – "I need to tell you something". – "What is it?" -"I love you" That's when I started sliding down the wall…. -"I think I love you, too" -"You think ?"-, he said. Well, what do you want… i was 17… I had never been in real love before… After that moment it was pretty much clear to where we stand and what we were going to do. We just needed to see each other to confirm that. Meanwhile none of my friends or relatives were taking it seriously. Girls at the university were saying such things as "Oh, it's not his picture!" or "He's an old man and just wants a cute girl to talk to him on the phone!". On his side it was something like that " She is not real, she's fooling you!", "Russian 18 year old girl? Are you crazy?" Neither me nor Drew listened to them, because we knew better. Even my mom, whose worst nightmare would be me getting married at 18, didn't mind us talking. She didn't think it was serious. We started planning his trip to Russia. After long conversations Drew and I decided that it would be better if he came in summer, so that i could normally finish my school year, so that we could spend all the time together. The next 4 months were a torture… but sweet torture We talked on the phone constantly, for 3-4 hours a day. We would never run out of topics. Everybody though we were crazy. But it was hard. Many times we regreted having scheduled his trip in summer. But soon… I was done with all my exams ( all A's, despite of the fact that I spent more time talking to Drew than studying).
Part 3: Meeting in Moscow
The day has come and I had to take the train to Moscow to meet Andrew. My mom was really worried but as she told me later it was like a dream for her. She still doesn't know how she could have let me go to Moscow all by myself to meet this foreign man. I guess she secretly trusted me.
I took an overnight train to Moscow, where my aunt met me in the morning. She took me to her place where spent some time with my cousin Igor and we took off to look for the "Golden Ring" hotel where me and Andrew were gonna stay at. Igor and I sat in the lobby waiting for 4 :00 pm when Andrew was supposed to show up. It was 4:20 and he still wasn't there. Later in the marriage I learnt that he's CHRONICALLY LATE. His excuse was that it was way hot ( 90 degrees: Russia's winters might be cold , but summer get really hot too) and he had to change his shirt that was soaking wet from the ride in an unconditioned Volvo. Whatever! [Image Can Not Be Found] So I decided to TAKE MATTERS INTO MY OWN HANDS:) and go ahead and check into the room and go up there. I said goodbye to my cousin, he still wasn't sure that he can let me go yet . And went to the reception desk. Well, it turned out Andrew had already checked in (Hm, why wasn't he coming down, i thought). So i got the key and went upstairs. Of course I got a little lost, mixed up the floors, trying to barge in into a different room and them finally found THE ONE. I pulled the door : it was closed. I knocked adn tried to open it with my key. I couldn't as it was locked from the inside. I kept pushing, and then finally it opened. OOOOOOOH MYYYYYY GOOOOOOOODDDD!!!! There HE WAS!!!!!!! It was the scariest, the weirdest moment in my life. The only thing I remember now is HOW AMAZINGLY tall he was and his HUGE GRIN on his face .
He explained me why he was late and invited me inside. Needless to say we both couldn't stop smiling from the weirdness of the situation and couldn't stop looking at each other: "So that's how you look in real life, huh?" Add to that that I was REALLY nervious ( I don't know why), so Andrew tried to calm me down. He brought me water, he sat me down. I was on the egde of freaking out and laughing Finally we got used to each other's presence and started to slowly see that person we had talked to on the phone for 6 months. We sat down talking about what we w[Image Can Not Be Found]ould do next and then he kissed me. *BLANK* From that moment on, all the memories get messed up. I don't remember when we did what. I still can not set up a timeline of those 3 days in Moscow. I know we went out right after the kiss and sat down in some cafe where I had my first banana split. He kept trying to look at me with flirty eyes, which still makes me crack up when I remember it We just talked… it took a year to realize that that was our first day and not the last one. It just seemed like we'd known each other forever. Half of it is true as we had spoken on the phone for 6 months…. At the end of the day, I knew I liked him…just like that, and not only on the phone. I guess he had to have done something else that evening but I don't remember. We went back to our room where conviniently for [Image Can Not Be Found]Drew we had a king bed, not a double Hm… I went to take a shower, and when I came back, I saw the whole room lighted with tiny tea lights. It was so beautiful That's why the first thing I said when I saw that was :"I'M NOT GONNA SLEEP WITH YOU, YOU KNOW!" . And the funniest part of all was that I don't rememebr saying that!!!!!
The next day we just walked around the city, took pictures on the Red Square, went to Moscow's amuzement park, where we bruised our knees on the bumper cars and I had my first ride on a "So called" rollercoaster, which absolutely amuzed Andrew, and now I see why ( Cedar Point 1 hour away, duh!!!)
Part 4: Time in Kazan Part 1 "The Meeting"
The internet seems to be a mystery to most people. Certainly finding love on the vast electronic world seems impossible. For me it just seemed like a way to stretch out and discover friends all over the world. I remember finding Elena's profile on the FriendFinder.com web site; I truly thought that her profile was a fake because she seemed TOO perfect. I really thought that she was just a ploy to get my email address so that I could be sent adds for Viagra or mortgage loans. However, I just couldn't resist the possibility that she was a real girl. So I took a chance and wrote to her. I was surprised and intrigued when she responded to me. Her letter informed me that she was busy with her final exams and that she had very little time to get to internet cafis. She did leave me with her home phone number so I did something that I had never done before: I called long distance to Russia. We talked effortlessly for several hours (which was amazing because I woke her up. I had not taken into account that Kazan was 8 hours ahead of Cleveland time). Suddenly I found myself calling her every other day. Our conversations lasted for hours and we never found a lack of topics to discuss. That was why it became obvious that we HAD to meet.[Image Can Not Be Found]
The title of the post is confusing to me. And their 'love' story is creepy. 30 yr old man goes to Russia to meet teenage girl and conveniently gets a hotel room with a king bed and puts candles all over? Andplusalso, she posted a racy photo to meet people to practice English with???
What kind of 33 year old guy has to go on mail order bride sites to find a girlfriend??
GOMI comments say that there is a rumor that in order to get his trust/inheritance he had to be married (to a girl) by a certain age. No proof of that (yet).
