I had no idea the military gets maternity leave. That's pretty nice. I wish the feds had something.
Yup. I think (if I remember correctly) new mothers are eligible for approximately 42 days of paid maternity leave. New fathers can take 10 days of paid paternity leave.
Me too. And now my agency is trying to not let people use accrued comp time for FMLA. This has not passed, but it is in the works. So if you worked a bunch of OT so you could have enough leave to have paid FMLA, you would not longer be allowed to use it. Sucks.
That's ridiculous. I still think it's crazy that you're only allowed to take 6-8 weeks of sick leave for maternity.
I know agencies that allow more sick leave than that. And really you can get a doctor's note pretty easily for increased leave.
That said I'm taking 8 and 6 and I will use CT if I need to.
Lurker here... But I want to share. mainly because my company gets such a bad wrap. I work for Bank of America, and they give us 12 weeks paid mat leave and up to 6 months unpaid. Also this goes for both mothers and fathers. So if you are a guy and you have a baby you also get the 12 weeks paid off. It is an awesome benefit and since my husband and I both work here when we have our child (we are TTC) we will both get the 12 weeks off together to bond.
People can say what they want about the bank but they are good to their employees.
Are you sure about this? I work for a fellow BIG bank, and FMLA does not allow both a mother and father at the same company to take leave. I have an employee that has a spouse that works for here as well, and they could not both use FMLA.

100% positive. We have two dads in my department alone that have taken the full 12weeks and both their wives also work for the bank and did too. We also have friends that just had a baby about 6 months ago and both took the 12 weeks off together (also both work for the bank, I live in an area that has a huge amount of bank jobs.) Why would it matter if we both work for the same company? That wouldn't negate one of us getting FMLA or pat/mat benefits.

My husband's job offers 6 weeks of paid parental leave and 5 additional floating parent days to use whenever. DH was able to take off 3 months using comp time that he earned by working extra hours each day.
ETA: He works for a large professional organization. Kind of like the American Bar Association, but a different profession.
My husband is in finance and he gets 6 weeks paid paternity leave. I work in higher ed for a private university as a staff member and I get 12 weeks unpaid.

FMLA allows for 12 weeks combined for both spouses, but that does not stop a company from doing more.
Exactly. FMLA is the minimum required by law if you qualify. Nothing stops a company from offering more benefits than 12 weeks unpaid.
Pharmaceutical industry -- 4 weeks paid prior to due date (if you go early you lose it, it does not carry over to after delivery; if you go late you get extra time on the company); 12 weeks post delivery for a total of 16 weeks paid

Yup. Plus depending on your commander/boss and your job, you can tack on more personal leave to extend that time. All still fully paid.
Plus if you get put on bedrest or something, it's sick leave and does not come out of your personal leave bank.

Financial services/asset management - we get 6-8 weeks STD paid at 100%, then another 4 weeks fully paid maternity leave. We can also use 4 weeks vacation.
The company also offers fully paid paternity leave. 2 or 4 weeks - I forget.

Biglaw, but not on the coasts. 8 or 10 weeks paid, I forget, and then a year total you can take and have job protection. This applies to both mothers and fathers, adoption included. I think it is lawyers, although I know non-lawyers also have a pretty good deal. I just don't know what it is.
H's job gave him more leave than I got, and I'm the one they cut open to get baby out! He got 2 weeks paid, period. My option was STD after 20 days of my own sick leave, then 4 weeks (b/c it was a C/S). If it had been a reg birth, it would have been 10 days, again, after my own 20 days of accrued leave.
My understanding is that DH's company offers 2 weeks paid paternity leave. Not sure if it is the same for maternity but I assume that it is. He works for a financial institution, whatever that means - it's not a bank, more like a stock market thing. LOL. I guess I have no idea what they do actually. He works in IT so the nature of the business isn't all that relevant to his job....
I work for a mid size accounting firm. We have paid maternity leave depending on your years of service. For 5+ years, it's 6 weeks paid, so not much. I used to work for a big 4 accouting firm and I believe they have at least 12 weeks paid.
I work for a big 4, and we get two weeks paid (plus PTO and STD). We do have 26 weeks job and benefit protection though.

I think it's an OPM edict that a lot of agencies/offices ignore. Unfortuantely, since I'm in the office that gives advice for this stuff, I think I need to abide by it. Good call on the doctor's note though. Over 300+ hours of sick leave and counting....
My DH works for a large financial institution. They used to do 6 weeks paid, but when they merged with another large financial institution, they doubled paid maternity leave to 12 weeks (with the option to take another 8 unpaid) and also added two weeks paternity leave for fathers. It was great to have him home for the first two weeks after birth, especially since my whole leave was unpaid.

I was thinking about this last night and I think my command would rather we use the CT just b/c they hate with a passion paying it out. It's a double edged sword for a lot of us b/c we can really rack up the CT and since it must be used w/in a year, it makes for some difficulties using that plus use or lose up.
I accidentally had 4 hours paid out b/c of the way the pay periods worked and it was a pain having to switch out leave, etc b/c they didn't want to actually pay it but I hadn't taken any AL yet in the year that I could replace it with. It was all other CT or SL.
I worked for a non-profit in NYC. The place had a large amount of recent college grads and advanced career-type people (usually in the director-level positions) and my guess is that they offered maternity benefits as a way to retain the folks who fell in between those two categories.
In the 6.5 years I spent there, only 3 people ever used the maternity benefits. No one has had a baby since I left in 2009.
