Oh and also crown molding falling off and hitting me in the head. On a 400k semi-attached home. The seller's agent went " Oh that can be easily fixed". Deal breaker for me.
Gross!! Definitely smoke! Also, animal piss stains (because it's fucking hard to get that smell out of carpets!! In my old house (that was a "newer" house) my cat pissed in the corner of the guest bedroom! I'm so glad I was able to sell the house but the smell came out when it rained no matter how much I cleaned it! I'm assuming the new owners eventually noticed!! Oh yes and a child molester even within a few streets would turn me the fuck off. Also, a wet smelling basement. Old fucking shit that hasn't been replaced in years etc. Just stuff that would be too much work compared to just painting and replacing floors...
Also, haunted shit definitely! Not sure how you could find out though until you lived there! haha I wouldn't buy a home older than 1940's because they creep me the fuck out! I grew up in a home that was built in 1909 and the basement was rock and dirt, used to freak me the fuck out!

True story.
We walked into this place. It was a typical midcentury ranch. Clearly a bachelor pad. The living room contained black leather furniture, a weight bench, a giant TV, and a shitload of DVDs meticulously arranged on shelves, but not much else. In the center of the room was a large empty cage. We were like, what goes in there, and WHERE IS IT? Later, we rounded the corner to look at one of the bedrooms, and there, munching on the carpet, were two bunnies the size of small dogs. Free range indoor bunnies, ya'll. Dealbreaker. We got the heck out of there. I didn't want to deal with getting rabbit shit out of carpets.

We're opposites. I would never live in new construction except maybe for some sort of LEED certified eco friendly home. Architecturally, I don't like homes newer than the 40s. Give me a 1920s craftsman!
Smell and dirty-ness. Before we opted to build we went to a home that really was a dream home but it was filthy. It smelled filthy, you could see dirt in places dirt shouldn't be. We were in and out quick.
Eav-- so I just found out my grandpa still owns a lot in my parent's neighborhood. In Alyssa's dream world, he gives it to us. Is it crazy expensive to build your own house? Not looking for specific figures here (unless you want to share that) but could you build for cheaper than you could buy? Can you tell me more about the whole thing?
We are in a cheaper area so I'm not sure about prices where you are. We are building in a neighborhood that is owned by a builder. He had like 10 plans you could choose from and then you can customize the inside entirely along with the outside colors but you cant really design the layout or anything. With that said, the base price for our house is about 150k and we have added about 20k in extras. We are spending less than we would to buy a "used" house in the area but that is probably because the builder really wants to sell. I imagine if you are starting from scratch -- finding your own builder and designing from the ground up it would be quite a lot more.
