Yeah Muddled, I remember watching the first few episodes a few years ago and wanting it to be dirtier. Space cowboys would have fucked up scruffy faces and ripped clothes and stuff, right?
Because that whole har de har har joke at the end was not nearly funny enough to justify the cheesy 80's sitcom ending. All it needed was a midair freeze frame jump. Perhaps a PSA at the end.
Lurker here, but I watched the pilot at the beginning of the week. I love this show and have watched the series many times. I'm sad people don't like it. That said, the pilot isn't my favorite episode and I have watched it far less than some of the others.

Now in the show's defense if I remember right the first episode wasn't intended to be the pilot. It's a later episode but the Fox execs weren't happy and felt it wasn't "pilot-y" enough and had them right a second one which became the first episode.

I thought the doctor was the best-looking guy on there.
I had trouble getting into the pilot. I thought it dragged, though pilots frequently tend to. What caught me was the end, where Mal decisively and instantly sizes up the situation, shoots the guy, orders that the body be disposed, and goes on with his business as though nothing more needed to be said about the situation. And really, nothing more did need to be said. It's something shows rarely admit, that sometimes killing someone isn't noteworthy within the framework of their show.
Yeah, I remember reading something about them shifting stuff around because they felt the original pilot didn't have enough action.
My favorite part was Mal shooting the fed without even blinking. Can I also say that River annoys the shit out of me? And Jane is just a little too on the nose stereotypical for me to enjoy.
(and yes, I went and watched the first episode so that Habs wouldn't be mad at me.)
