I've been able to keep it together all day, but this I was talking to my principal when the kids walked in, and I just lost it.
The kids are awesome, and they were so concerned that I was ok. None of them had heard the news yet, so I just told them very matter-of-factly what happened, and then we talked about safety in our school.

(((Hugs))). I struggle with how to handle these incidents with my children. My 10 year old hadn't heard anything about it until I brought it up. She is terribly dramatic and I don't want her to be afraid of what is meant to be a safe place. I made sure we discussed "code red" and reminded her that it's been established for a reason and isn't to be taken lightly. I want to put them all in a bubble and keep them there.

It was really hard, and I'd had no intention of bringing it up with them. Unfortunately, since I was crying when they walked in, I really couldn't hide it.
I just tried to focus on how lucky they are, and then I steered the conversation to our school's safety protocols. We have so little information about the shooting that I didn't feel comfortable trying to answer their questions.
