I would definitely encourage Caramini to choose either my career (dentist/professor) or DH's (physician). If she were to choose something less remunerative, I would be honest with her about the trade offs she might make, but I would also support her doing what she loves as long as she understands the fiscal limitations of certain choices.

dh and i are both physicians. i have no plans of encouraging our children to pursue medicine. i love my job, however it is a long road, lots of sacrifices/loans, and who knows what the practice of medicine will be like in 20 years...
DH and I wouldn't really want her to go into law (his field), although if she specialized in a different type of law or studied law at a university outside the U.S. (with the intention of staying outside the U.S.), I might handle it better. I just really don't want her to have $100K + of loans and then be bitter about feeling stuck in a certain job for the rest of her life just to pay them off.
If she wanted to go into anything I've done professionally or currently do (non-profit org work & translation), I would be okay with it, but only if she had realistic expectations about the crap pay.

DH and I are actually pretty set in encouraging our child(ren) to pick a trade and follow the education/apprenticeship model. Unless they have a REAL passion for something that would require college. We both felt we were pressured to go to college (which lead to taking on SLs) and would have been happier/in a better place financially had we been allowed to persue something else.
And besides, people will ALWAYS pay for the pumbler/mechanic even if they are saving money on other things.
I was in Finance/Insurance & Risk Management, and I'd be supportive of them getting involved in those fields. My DH is a police officer, and neither one of us wants our kids to go that route. I want them to have a career where they are respected. People treat my DH like shit when he has that uniform on.

I'm in kind of a specialized area in Marketing, so I probably wouldn't encourage it. I would help them make good decisions if they really wanted to, but I feel a little stuck right now, and I would want them to have more options.
DH is also an engineer like many other posters. He loves what he does. The only problem is that no one is going into his particular field, and the work is multiplying. He can't find any qualified candidates to do the work. They would always have a good job and solid prospects if they went into his area of expertise, so I'd definitely encourage that.
