we have prepared a lot more since Sandy - and even before Sandy b/c Irene made us realize that if we had lost power we would have been FUCKED b/c of the water coming in and our sump pump saving us.
so we got a generator to keep a sump pump going (for Sandy water wasn't a problem so we just used it for the fridge, some tv time for the kids, and a small space heater to keep the one room we were all sleeping in warm).
we have some charging things for our phones that run on solar power (in case gas runs out and we can't run our cars or generator).... we have some head "lights" to help DH get around in the basement when he's working on the generator, etc.... quite a few battery running light sources...
a kerosene heater was another big thing we got - esp after the gas freak out around here- we wanted another way to keep the house warm if we couldn't get gas to run our generator.
huge gas cans - we have 2 14gallon cans that we will fill up if there is some warning of a storm... we have to get some sort of stabalizer to put in there to store it long term.
we have large bottles of water stored, too (the huge jugs for water coolers).
We have a camping cooking stove and a bunch of canned or no heat food at any given time. Plus candles, flashlights and headlamps. Our headlamps are always on the shelf right next to our bed, should we need them in the middle of the night.
To the poster who commented on water draining from the tub, we used a rubber stopper coated with vaseline to seal it during Sandy and it worked great.
This silly tub has a built in raised hair trap (I hate the entire set it is on the list to go sometime, we rarely use the tub it isn't a high priority), the normal plug drains dont fit.
I actually get more water in the two bins than in the bath it is one of those low water use ones where the over flow drain is low too. The stall shower in the other needs a bin. I just keep three extras stacked with the supply bins.

We have multiple crank flashlights, just because we could never keep batteries fresh in the old ones. We also have a solar/crank radio and a crank phone charger.

Also, be sure to take a picture of yourself standing in front of a powerline with your bitchface on, so you can include it in any vents about the power company terrorizing your children. That's Step One.

Our powerlines are underground, so I don't know how I will do this one!
I totally thought of this picture, though, when my DH was freaking out about the power being out. That guy is way too addicted to TV and internet.
