I know, I know you can't diagnose over the interwebs, but here goes. I've been experiencing mild heel pain. It feels like it's bruised. Went on an 8 mile run today, didn't feel anything except for after the run. My achilles have been feeeling tight, so I need to stretch. Wondering if the pain could be associated with the achilles? Thoughts?
Ice your heels, especially after running, and take NSAIDs. If that doesn't work, you can read about Achilles tendinitis on that same site & see if that sounds more like it. Good luck!
I had pain like that as well and my ortho diagnosed it as plantar fasciitis. Rest (almost 3 months worth), 2 steroid injections and silicone heel cups ended up helping. He also told me to stretch a lot, but always with your foot flat on the ground (as opposed to standing on a step or something and dropping your heel down if that makes sense). And take a towel and pull the ball of your foot towards you while you're sitting with a straight leg. Hope you feel better soon!

I am having ankle/foot trouble too, and this scares me I have an appointment with sports medicine tomorrow, and I'm dreading what they're going to tell me.
my achilles pain manifests itself in my heel - but it doesnt feel like a bruise, it justs feels like tightness sometimes, and i just rest a bit and it goes away (it's really not bad at all, my dr didnt seem at all concerned).

is it possible that it IS a bruise?
Can I ask what you mean by rest "a bit"? Like, how long? My pain flaired up last Tuesday. I didn't run for a week, tried last night, and I couldn't do it.

i usually just take a day or two off comlpetely and then ease back into my routine and im fine. but my achilles pain isnt that bad, it's more like discomfort. actually, i havent had it in a long time. last time was after a 15 mile training run, the next day it was just a little tight. so i took advil, took a rest day, and i was good as new the following day (when i took it easy).
The only heel pain I had with my Achilles was when it was so bad I couldn't walk normally and then it was only if I stepped off the edge of my sandal and just put a ton of pressure where the Achilles attached to the bone (which was excruciating and not bruise-like at all).
Any occasional discomfort from my Achilles now is simply back of heel tightness.
I had the stone-bruised heel feeling when I started running post-foot break/sprain and I was so scared of getting PF I took my foot massager and rolled the bottoms of my foot and iced it and it went away. I also got new shoes.

i giggled at this because a few weeks ago, i had a weird pain in the back of my calf. i went for a massage and my therapist was like, "wow, what is this huge bruise on the back of your leg???"
(my DD likes to use my body as a trampoline, but apparently she is getting a tad heavy)
taxassmith - if it hurts after a week of rest, DO NOT RUN ON IT or else you just totally reversed all the heeling that was done during that week. you will have to start all over again! so, if you already rested 1 week, give it one more week. but if it hurts, DO NOT RUN or else you just reversed 2 weeks!
i think 4-6 weeks of rest is typical for injuries. pre-injuries (soreness) go away obviously a lot quicker, which is why its better to rest 4 days once you feel an onset of injury rather than try to run through it and need to rest 4 weeks.
good luck to you both though. my standard answer is always ART and hot yoga.
I would love to live in a world where PF feels like what PP's are describing. Mild bruise pain my ass, that crap was like a stabbing ice pick! lol I'm a little jealous of those that are describing it differently.
Jonali- I've had a bruised bone type feeling in the front of my foot before. It just felt like the ball of my foot my bruised. I've noticed random foot pains (ball, arch, heel) when my achilles and my calf are tight. I usually stretch, roll, etc; take a few days off, and then I'm fine.
