Ditto on Capitol Hill. I never saw a rat when I lived there and I was in a townhouse. It was a few years ago but the rent was really reasonable for just a few blocks from eastern market. Of course I can't recommend the MD suburbs enough. No rats out here! No bars either (or none within walking distance...only drawback).
My roommate is pretty awesome. He fixed a doorway that I broke while moving in, lets me drink his coffee on the weekends, has great cats, AND keeps the house supplied with great movies.

My commute would be THE SUCK if I moved to MD. I couldn't find anything in Capitol Hill in my (very tight) budget when I was looking. H and I might be able to afford it once he's here, but there were no rooms in my price range when I had to move.
I will say I moved a ton the first few years I lived in this area. It took me a while to find something that was right for my commute, lifestyle, price range, etc.. My friends have all done the same thing. We've ended up all over the area and while sometimes a pain to visit, it's nice to have an excuse to go visit different neighborhoods.
I am going to have nightmares. I don't care what some of you say that is a huge freaking rodent!
What are you talking about? You lived through this! Think back to undergrad. Think hard. Now try to recall the drunken walks home and that time you saw a "squirrel" the size of a possum. That was a rat.
Did this only happen on the other side of the river?

NASTY!!
We just got rid of NINE, yes 9 flying squirrels that were living in our attic --- had 4 live traps out every night - kept catching them each night... driving them 25 miles away and releasing them. (after stupidly releaasing the first 2 near our house then realizing they would be coming right back in).
yeah- i would not be able to sleep AT ALL if i was her. I'd have a trap set up NOW - not waiting for anyone to come ---- have a heart traps are great b/c they catch it live- no dead body to scrape up... and like with the sticky traps, no body parts the animal has chewed off to get off the sticky pad.
Ahhh! I call mice "rats" so that thing is an effing monster. Seriously, this is normal in some places? Holy hell.
FYI-when we have one of those "Where should I move?" polls, I'll just add that I've lived in Omaha my whole life, and the only rats I've ever seen are in pet stores.
Holy shit. Between the rats & the flying squirrels in your houses... I guess I'll take my giant snakes, turtles, & black widow spiders. At least they all stay outside.

Yup, I agree with others...that rat isn't huge by DC standards but still gross to find inside your house.
I'll never forget the day I was running down M St. in Georgetown early one morning and tripped on something under my feet. I look over and at first thought I kicked a cat but nope, it was a huge rat that I tripped on and kicked into the street. I seriously wanted to burn my shoes after.
I used to live in an English basement in Foggy Bottom in grad school, and the facilities folks for management would set out all these rat traps under the stairs by my front door. Each night, within 3 minutes of turning off the outside light, I'd hear each and every one of those traps spring. The pavement outside my front door was stained from all the rat blood.
OMG! Add this to the reasons I will never be able to live in DC. And, thank you Harpy. I have now decided that a single family home is totally not for me.
A former coworker of mine bought a condo in Adams Morgan. Only after they moved in did they find out that AdMo apparently has the highest rat population in DC.
The first time I saw a DC rat, I thought it was a cat. DH and I were walking up 14th St. to have dinner at DC Coast. It was dark and I when I saw the furry thing run in the grass of a building we were passing, I go "Aww..kitty!". My DH asked where and once I pointed, he lost his shit laughing at me.
True Story. I felt like the biggest damn country bumpkin.
