Good for you. I sleep a lot better now that I drink less.
I cut down 2 years ago and have been able to maintain approximately the same weight for that time for the first time in my adult life (mind you it's still way too much, but I didn't gain the usual 10-1bs.)
Thanks, y'all. You know I'm one of the resident lushes (cocktail glass in my purse what?) so this is kind of a big deal. I really want to improve my health this year - physical and mental - and this seems like a good step toward both.
Are you 100% never having another drink this year, or just not getting drunk?
That is the plan, hence my OP: "I'm going to give up alcohol for 2013."
Well ok then. People say "I'm giving up drinking" all the time and they don't always mean "I'm never touching a drop of alcohol". As many of the follow up comments also show.
Really Bucky? If someone says they're giving up (as opposed to cutting back) booze, I always assume they mean it.
Look, I didn't analyze her post this deeply, lol. I also didn't mean that I thought she was lying. If I said I was stopping drinking, I'd likely mean that I was going to have an occasional drink at dinner but not do happy hour, drink a bottle of wine at home, etc.
I didn't mean to ask a stupid or offensive question, and the response was kind of snarky. I am in a bad mood myself though so maybe I'm being stupid. Either way, sorry I brought it up

I didn't find Jenny's response remotely snarky. I hope your mood gets better.

Good luck! I cut back significantly, and switched to pretty exclusively vodka, and only one, about two years ago. It was due to digestive issues, and it helped a lot. I also lost 10+ pounds (and I was quite thin already). I really like it. Not waking up "fuzzy" or hungover ever is amazing.
You know, I'm semi considering the same thing for the exact same reason. I'm still exhausted and I ended up skipping the gym (and most other productive things today) because of a headache/general crappiness feeling. And all I did yesterday was happy hour with a couple of beers following it up. This is lame.
Are you 100% never having another drink this year, or just not getting drunk? I'm thinking the latter for myself. I don't think I could totally give it up but limiting myself to 1-2 is probably a good idea.
This is what I'm going to do. I fucjing hate being hungover.
Good Luck!! I haven't drank for two years and it was easier than I thought. I drink sparkling water in a wine glass every night as the thing I missed the most was drinking from a wine glass. When I go out I drink cran and club soda. good Luck!!
I think it's worth mentioning that you can go to meetings. That may be touchy for some people, but the only requirement is a desire to not drink and get support for that. Modern AA talks a lot about people getting into the program at different points, not the traditional rock bottom of our grandparent's years. Anyway, you can go to an open meeting, there can be some really helpful reflection and things to keep you on your goals. You do not have to get up and say "Hi, I'm an alcoholic" to be welcome. Meeting places vary widely, but they are all free, can be convenient, and you may get something out of participating. It's really an option for anybody who doesn't want to drink.
GL AH! Thanks to some conversations on MM, I've decided that it is a good idea for me to cut back on drinking. I am not feeling quite as ambitious as you, though! I am very impressed by your commitment to your health!
Maybe we should have "who isn't drinking" threads on MM. LOL
Thanks for all the support, y'all! I figured volunteering to DD last night would be a good way to start this off, and I had some delicious ginger beer with a splash of grenadine and Rose's lime. I want to experiment with infused simple syrups to add to club soda.

This is a great idea! I agree with PPs that one of the big issues with quitting alcohol is replacing the ritual. Having a delicious bubbly drink that makes you feel like you're treating yourself is a great idea!
I realize in posts like this that I am a freak of nature. I drink maybe 2-3x a year and usually at weddings or anniversary. And only like 1-2 drinks at a time.
Because of a medical condition/medication, I can't drink anymore. While I do miss a good gin and tonic or vodka gimlet, it's not that bad. Really. After the first month it will be smooth sailing.
