since we depend on my steady income to pay bills (DH is commission only) - we are taking a hit of $108/mo. That is a very big deal to me since we are on a ridiculously tight budget as it is.
Is that based on individual salary, or per married couple gross income?
For MFJ it's apparently .9% of everything over $250K per couple. But if you don't individually get there, the employer won't withhold for it of course--so you'll have underpaid.
This is correct; in the example of the husband and wife each making $150,000; your employer would not withhold the extra .9% and you would have to submit quarterly estimated payments to make up the difference if you want to be absolutely sure to avoid penalties. They would use your income tax overpayment to offset it if you were in a refund situation.
H doesn't get paid until next week but we make roughly the same amount and I just got my paystub today, so it looks like an additional ~$140/month total taken from our checks for our household.
It's going to be $68.64 more a pay period for me. So $186 or so a month overall for both of us. This coming right after my bonus taking a 17% dip I am feeling a little poor.
I think like $75 per pay period, which essentially eliminated step increase that I just got in November. Boo!
They already took it out last paycheck. I was a little surprised since the Pay period was completely in December. Lame.
that is because you are a cash basis taxpayer, so even though it was for time worked in december, it was paid to you in january, so it follows 2013 rules.
