I have family in St Louis and apparently they are popular there, because that is the only place I have had them (they were the flattish open top ones) I love the cream cheese ones.

They're not common where I'm from, and not part of either my or DHs ethnic background, but I have made them using ham and cheese, from a recipe I found on a blog somewhere. Thought my kids would like them. They didn't. But at least it left me knowing what kolache are (and I pronounce it the same as the OP).
I am in TX and have had both fruit and meat/cheese kolaches. There is a Czech bakery off the highway halfway between Dallas and Austin that has the most amazing kolaches. I wanted to fill my freezer with the pumpkin cream cheese ones.
The bakery in Hillsboro?? I went to college in Waco and that little Czech bakery was always packed on Saturday mornings. I still dream about their kolaches.
another baylor person! unite. i actually hated the stuff from the czech stop in west though. barf.

I haven't thought about kolaches in forever! My (Czech) grandma used to make them every year for Easter when I was little, then my mom did. But since my mom is now gluten-free she stopped making them
I've always pronounced them "koh-lah-chee". The ones my family made looked like those jam thumbprint cookies, except they were pastry dough and had pie-filling in the middle - with icing drizzled on top!
