Since MM loves a good grocery store controversy, I though I would share my debateably rude encounter yesterday.
I live in Arlington, VA. The Redskins had a huge game yesterday first playoff game in like 5 years. Like any good fan I wore my jersey most of the day.
When I was at the checkout lane at the grocery store, I greeted the cashier and she said "hi." Then mentioned something about my stupid jersey. And I joked back, well you should think about moving to Seattle. I've heard it's nice. She said "I don't really care about the other team, I just hope the Redskins lose."
Um..yeah. I'm not sure what to say to that. So I just go about my business, running my card, bagging groceries.
I get it. You don't like the Redskins. But they are the home team. The least you can do is keep your mouth shut and not tell me you hope my team loses. She seemed like a nice enough girl otherwise, so I didn't say anything to management.
Ya, I'd be annoyed. It be one thing if you actually liked the other team or gave a sh!t other than just not liking the Redskins. Then again, I am used to being harassed bc I am a Cowboys fan in the middle of Ravens/Steelers/Eagles country.

As a Yankees fan, I get this all the time. So, I don't see it as a big deal. Everyone is entitled to their opinion & can voice it. I'm not the type of person to make small talk with strangers, so this is unlikely to happen to me. But if I did, I wouldn't be surprised.
Oh, and I should also say that I don't see how your comment about moving to Seattle is any less snotty than her comment about wanting the Redskins to lose. But even so, this should all be good clean fun and nothing more.
I don't really mind when people say stuff like this jokingly or in a pleasant manner, but it's really uncalled for when they're just downright mean about it.
During the most recent Stanley Cup finals I went to a local sports store to see if they had a Devils flag for my house. The owner said they were out of stock, and a patron wearing a Rangers jacket started going on and on in a really nasty tone about how awful the Devils are. Riiiight, dude. We knocked your ass out of the playoffs and WE'RE the shitty team 8-D
Yeah, maybe it's because I don't give a flying F about sports, but I don't think it was rude...maybe she just wants all the skins fans to stop crowding her favorite local eating spot, and thats why she wants them to lose. (I might be projecting, lol)
I vote not rude. There are teams I just dislike so regardless of who they are playing I route against them. I probably wouldn't say anything while working... but yea, I view this as normal sports banter.
Yeah, that was rude. I had a lively exchange in Costco recently when I was wearing my team's shirt for the SEC championship game (I am a Georgia fan and the cashier was a fan of the team we were playing that day--Alabama), but that was all in good fun. I don't get the hating just to hate. From the way you tell the story it sounds like the cashier was mean spirited about it.
Sorry about RGIII; I watched that game. That kid is a class act and I hope he makes a quick recovery. Hopefully my team will wallop the Seahawks for you next week.
I don't get why people are like that. And in that scenario (customer and employee) I don't think it was appropriate.
Is it any different than someone seeing a Romney badge/sticker and saying "I hope your candidate loses the election"? I doubt any employer would be happy about someone saying that.
It wouldn't annoy me. I could see maaaybe going to management after the first "stupid comment" about your jersey, but after engaging her (and therefore I'm guessing assuming she was joking?), it seems weird that you would be offended by her next remark.
But I'm also a Giants fan, so take this with a grain of salt
You really have to expect this kind of joshing if you choose to wear a team jersey in public. So I don't think it's offensive for someone to say something if they dislike the team.
But, again, it's all about tone. Being nasty about it is just uncalled for.
Jigsy - I don't think you'll see many more after yesterday's game
I never actually found out what her team was, just that she hated the skins for some unspoken reason. Maybe if she was a Seattle fan, I would have not cared as much.
I guess the fact that they are the home team more than anything bugs me. I would never tell a Yankees fan in NYC that I hated the Yankees and that I always hope they lose. Even though I think it.
DH joked if he ran a grocery store and someone did that he would fire them on the spot.

I actually think that your comment about her moving to Seattle was ruder. I do think that cashiers should be discouraged from that kind of banter so that customers don't leave annoyed, but I wouldn't go to management.

People say that to Yankees fans in NY all the time. (And they probably deserve it
I guess my husband and I shouldn't have shittalked the dog in the elevator wearing a Skins jersey on Saturday!
But really, this is usually just ribbing and not an actual expression of hatred. I think you need to lighten up. It's just a game. A game that is made more fun by rivalries.
The only time I didn't mind it was when MH and I went to Boston for a hockey game, and on the concourse a dad pointed us out little boy who gleefully shouted, "Devils STINK!" (I think the kid just really wanted to say it and the dad was looking for someone non-threatening wearing a NJ jersey, lol.)

I never do it just because I'm afraid of happening to say it to the crazy person who's going to stab me over it.

This part wouldn't bother me. I wouldn't feel obligated to keep my mouth shut about a team I really hate just because they were the home team. However, I also don't see a reason to just volunteer randomly that you hate someone's team. I am a college football fan and I hate the Florida Gators but I don't randomly walk up and start trash talking to people I see wearing Gators attire. ESPECIALLY if my team isn't playing them that day/week.
It is weird that she made the statement out of the blue without specifying whether she has a team affiliation or not. It might make sense if she was a Cowboys or Giants or Eagles fan, or a Seahawks fan, but if she is, she didn't let you know. It's just kind of bizarre that she would say "Hi there, I hate your team" while ringing up your groceries.

Yes, she was rude. Her job as a cashier is to WAIT ON YOU, not to offer unsolicited commentary about customers' clothing. This is not in the same category with remarks one might expect in the stadium parking lot. She was ON THE JOB and you were her customer. WTF, yes, rude as hell and unprofessional.
Team V. I would have said the same exact thing about the Yankees. I always do it with a smile on my face, but trash talking is part of the sports culture. It's fun.
Had the Redskins won, I feel like you would have forgotten about this already.

Fellow Dawg fan here! Is it weird that I think I hate South Carolina more than Florida these days? I think it's Spurrier. I can't stand him.

Also, Murray is staying!!!
Go Dawgs!! No, it's not weird at all. I'm with you on SC, they are really a thorn in our side recently. Ugh. My hatred of Florida is really ingrained in me from my college days when Spurrier was the coach but I am liking the Muschamp era so far. ;D
I had NOT heard yet that Murray is staying! Woohoo, that is AWESOME news! I will sorely miss Jarvis Jones though.
