Our work pays for the holiday so we are not required to use our leave during holidays so I'm not really sure if they would get tacked on at the end. I suppose they would if you had X amount of leave.
My work pays us for the holiday. I was hoping to get the extra days added on to my leave since I was out for Thanksgiving, Xmas and New Years.
How does this work? Were you on a reduced salary during leave?
Nope. No salary. I had one week of vacation left so I had to use that first, and I got six weeks of NYS disability, which was like $140 after taxes, etc. I guess since I'm still employed there, I'm entitled to the same holidays as everyone else.
My employer pays us for holidays, so we don't use vacation time for them.
Memorial Day fell during my maternity leave. I used 6 weeks of short-term disability (which was 60% of my regular pay), 3 weeks of vacation and 1 week of sick time (both full salary, I squirreled away vacation and sick time so I could get paid for as much mat. leave as possible) and ended up with just 2 weeks unpaid. One day of that 2 unpaid weeks was paid in the form of holiday pay for Memorial Day.
They didn't tack a day on the end or let me use my Memorial Day holiday another day, they just paid me for it like they normally would. One of my paychecks was for 8 hours. That check was awesome. I hadn't seen a check that small since high school.
ETA: I think my company is similar to Chirp's. I remember reading somewhere that we get 100% pay if we've been at the company at least 2 years. We have to use 40 hours of PTO first though. Holidays are treated the same as if you were working.
My leave was a combination of paid (vacation, sick) leave, and unpaid. IIRC I got paid regular holidays that fell during my paid-leave period, and did not get paid any that fell during my unpaid leave.
I recall it was an issue in whether I wanted to return to work before or after thanksgiving, and I gave up two paid holidays to keep my leave going another week or so.
For the suck it up people, would you not even ask what your company's policy is? I mean, if the policy is no pay, no extra days, then by all means, suck it up. But I'd at least want to know.
My company doesn't offer paid maternity leave. I used my 2 weeks of vacation and saved like hell for 9 months to be able to take 9 weeks off when DS was born.
I guess I don't understand what being on maternity leave has to do with it per se. The company's HR surely has a standard policy about circumstances under which company holidays are paid or unpaid. Trying to negotiate around a standard policy intended to apply equally to everyone seems a bit gauche here. It's not like negotiating a hiring package when you still have real leverage and the company still has real discretion on the terms under discussion.
Exactly, Fuss. This woman has a history of trying to work the system. I would think that you would just resign yourself to get paid according to policy and not worry about it.

I guess if she wanted to at least pretend to be serious about this, she could inquire about earning comp time by working on holidays before her leave begins, then applying that comp time to any unpaid holidays occurring during her leave. But her HR might not go for that if they have time-and-a-half pay for holidays.
