I can't figure out how to have an avatar that is not one of the ones already picked for you. Do you do it the same way you put a picture in your siggy?

Put a link to the Avatar URL you want to use in the box below the Avatar selection in your profile.

Go to Profile at the top of the page. Click on "Modify Profile".
Then where it says Avatar URL just paste in the link. You don't need to use any html code or anything, just the website link (example: mine just has i50.tinypic.com/29bo5dd.jpg)

This is one of the reasons I chose the username I did -- in part because my love for Biscoff Cookies (and Spread!) cannot be overstated, but in part because it meant there was a self-explanatory avatar. Otherwise I would have left it blank for ever and ever.
This is making me consider changing my username since people barely remember it anyway. I feel like I've used it too much and it's not as anonymous as I'd like.

Same here. I had recently watched My Neighbor Totoro again when I was creating a new username on The Nest, so I named myself after the CatBus in that movie. My previous name had been a song title that didn't lend itself to an easy avatar.
I'd love to have an avatar pic, but it never works for me. I put in the img link and the correct code and it just shows up blank. I don't understand what I'm doing wrong. Someone want to make it work for me??

You're using a web-based image, not one saved to your local drive, right? (Sorry if this is a stupid question, but some people don't realize the image has to be first hosted on a website.)
