I don't think I've ever heard anyone brag about sunburn? Tan, yes, but sunburn, no. Sunburns are awful. I complain when I get them, and get really mad at myself.
I don't know if brag is the right word. I guess I meant daily commentary/mentioning it over several days in a row.
The bragging seems to come more in to play when people compare their skin to mine and say they're almost as dark as me.
I guess I just find the whole thing odd
I find it odd and I'm white.
I'm glad tanning isn't as popular as it was when I was in high school, there are less white people bragging about those now too.
I used to tan in middle ( ) and high school. I got pretty addicted to it and would obsess over my tan. I also refused to wear the eye guards because I didn't want tan lines on my face. (RIP POOR DELICATE SKIN AROUND MY EYES.)
I'm glad tanning is not in vogue anymore, but I wish we would've decided this BEFORE I got into it. I can't imagine all the damage I've done to my skin... and it was all to look "hot" at what, age 13? ugh.
ETA: I do use sunless spray a few days before big events. I'd love to get regular spray tans (and I found a place on yelp that is only $15/pop), but I don't have the time to keep it up right now.
Since we're talking about tanning... I'm probably going to visit a tanning bed before our MX vacation. I know how bad they are for me, but if I don't go I'm going to develop my sun allergy down there and it will ruin the whole vacation. It's kind of a lose-lose situation
I lol'd at the don't feed the Bliss comment...this is a flameworthy post, of course she is going to post something to get people riled up, isn't that the point?
But what she posted isn't so flameworthy to me...well, except the gun part, I think guns are stupid...but I think most people are average looking (hence average---I think I am pretty average looking on a daily basis), and I think some people probably don't have great marriages all the time. I know there have been rough patches in my marriage, but I don't post that stuff because it's too personal. If my husband pulls a dick move, I don't want everyone to remember only the dick stuff since there is a lot more to him and our relationship.

Talk to some FFDO's and hear a few stories. It completely rocked our sense of security and opinions on guns. There's some messed up shit that took place, or almost took place, that you'll never hear on the news. Having a properly trained and armed person mitigated the situations.
Because if someone breaks in when DH is gone, that's how I'm going to defend myself. I don't understand people who think they need guns, but aren't properly trained and/or maintain proficiency at firing it.
Self defense is a dumb reason to own guns.
I tend to agree, most people that have hand guns have NO idea how to use them properly. Depends what types of guns though, have hunting shotguns/rifles for a reason and in some areas of the country you need them to protect from certain animals. I do not agree with needing an ak47 or anything like that though, I am not in Iraq or in a war zone. The gun laws need to be looked at obviously, and the worse part of all of this shit, is blue card you just need to pass a SIMPLE test..But hunter class is a 4-6 week course, test and proof you understand the safety aspect.

What would be flameworthy if it wasn't so LOL is where she said if she doesn't like someone in real life she willl get back at them by sleeping with their husband

This has me doing the cartoon head shake in disbelief...The FFDO program is one of the biggest wastes of money. The cost of certifying a pilot to carry a weapon is extreme. The most effective security measure implemented since 9/11 is locking cockpit doors. Since then, no one has breeched a cockpit. When an unruly passenger has tried to take down another airliner, it hasn't been an FFDO, it hasn't been an air marshal, it has been aware passengers willing to step up and stop them.

There's crazy shit going on the public doesn't know. I'm not talking about just in flight.it's the training and knowledge that comes along with it.

If a pilot wants that extensive training (which I think is just fine for someone who wants to carry a gun) that is great...they should take on the expense themselves.

The pilots do. Only the gun is paid for, not even the ammunition. it's airmarshal style training. I do believe all pilots should do it.

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and the Federal Air Marshal Service cover the cost of training and equipment; however, program participants are required to cover all other travel expenses as well as give up one week of paid work for training.

The program really isn't what I thought it was when I first heard about it. Normally I agree with you. I think we'll have to agree to disagree on this one
Sunburn is never sexy. Your roommates are weird. The only time I would talk about a sunburn is to complain how much it hurts and now annoyed I am that I got one (despite being VERY careful not to get one anytime I'm on vacation or planning on being out in the sun for hours!).
I think tanning is so stupid. I get wanting to look tan, but I find it unbelievable people still tan in this day and age. I have a good friend who tans like crazy all summer and is going to look SO OLD in a few years. And she's a nurse, I can't believe she's that willing to practically guarantee herself skin cancer. I also find it very odd that my gym offers tanning - we pay $5 a month for water massage (which is nice) and tanning. I don't tan and I find it crazy that people who go to the gym to be "healthy" finish their healthy habit by tanning. I guess maybe that's more for the vanity people vs the healthy people?
My girlfriends and I used to compare tans back when it was cool to see who could get the darkest. I would get much darker than any of my friends, so I always "won". So maybe your roommates are just saying that to you in a somewhat ironic way...does that make sense? Still weird, but that would be my guess.
I've got the "I'm almost as tan as you" many times. I try not to take offense because I know that most white people say it because there impressed by their tan. Being tan makes them more attractive/healthy looking.
For those who don't get why it may offensive, It's one of those cultural things. Historically, black people have been valued by how light or dark their skin is. One day, a coworker saw a group picture and said "I'm almost as dark as you" in a upbeat tone. I on the other hand thought wow, people really do see color first. Being one of the only black person in the photo made me really feel like a minority in my workplace.

I think the notion that white people are more attractive and healthy looking with a tan is somewhat offensive. Certainly not as offensive as the value historically placed on how light/dark a black person's skin is, but offensive nonetheless.

I only meant for those who say that kind of comment. (not in mind if you know what I mean)

I've had the exact opposite issue with skin color. Lots of people love to put their arms next to mine and state "Look how dark I am compared to you!" because I am so pale. This is mostly from people of Latino descent.
When I get sunburned, I mostly just complain about how much it hurts or how damn red my skin got. Getting sunburned is stupid and I can't imagine why people would brag out it.

I am late to the party, but bncha is my new favourite nestie.
About the gun thing. It takes some posters H 1 minute to get to the door with the gun. Well, why not just run out the back door? And, if watching Law and Order has taught me anything, you usually wake up to the intruder putting his hand over your mouth. He isnt knocking at the front door. And I really will never get guns in handbags or cars.
I think handguns should be illegal. Hunting guns should have to be stored off separate from ammo.
Bliss, I don't know what velvet was saying, but I'm going to say that what makes me nervous about you having a gun is not a fear that you'd shoot someone else, but rather that we've seen you write about how awful and hopeless you've been before. I'm hopeful that's all hyperbole, but it always worries me when people who have been truly depressed have the tools to hurt themselves. Obv. you could hurt yourself in lots of ways, but guns are so much easier, more hurtful, and more final than the other alternatives.
Stan, this is what I was getting at.
Because no one has ever had a bad day (month or whatever) and felt hopeless. 8-D
Think about it. I've been posting here for over 7 years. I get WAY more mean, hurtful comments here than anywhere. If I wanted to hurt myself with my gun (or other means) I would have done it. I mean really. Like Jigs said about sharing something douchey someone's H does. No one ever forgets it. But there's so much more to the person and relationship.

Well, if an intruder came in at night through the front door, they would be between us and any exterior door--front, back, side, and garage. If I awake to an intruder with a gun to my mouth, I'm pretty much screwed anyway, now ain't I? And if we could make it to our back door, what do you advise we do then? The cars are in the garage (we'd have to go back into the house to get to one). Cell phones don't work in our yard (or house). It's a 20 mile mountain hike to the closest firehouse (30 to the police station). And there are truly bears, fox, and--according to latest reports--packs of coyotes hanging out in our back yard. Oh, and right now, there is ~5 inches of ice covering everything around us and it's been averaging 25-30 degrees at night.
Frankly, I'm much rather be locked in the bedroom closet, calling 911, with my DH holding a loaded gun aimed at the closet door. And again, any intruder stupid enough to pick houses in a neighborhood of 50% hunting lodges, next to hunting land, in the sticks of a very pro-hunting area...they are begging for someone to put some holes in them.
Because no one has ever had a bad day (month or whatever) and felt hopeless.

You can roll your eyes if you want, but it was legitimate concern, and I think you're kind of glossing over how upset you've been here before. Or how upset you were as it read to the rest of us.
I'm not glossing over how upset I've been before. I've lived it. I think though, that you're putting too much emphasis on what I've posted before. I'm a very passionate person and when I feel something, I feel it intensely.
I can understand how it reads to the rest of you. I've read old blog posts and cringed at how hopeless I've felt. But I also know that no matter how hopeless I've felt, I've always been able to pick myself up. My friend calls me the "boot strap" queen.
