At a friend's wedding, the priest spent the entire homily talking about how people use the word love incorrectly or at the very least, too loosely. So, no more "I love coke" because I can't really love a can of coke. Or, can I? *-)
actually, i agree with the priest. i'm not coming from a religious perspective, but i do think the term "love" is often used willy nilly.
i think "friend" is, too.
i don't think it's a big deal or anything, just my opinion.
This shit is so fucked up, man. Put another line on the list of reasons to never take my kid to church.
That's a little unfair. Not all churches are like that.
I agree, not all are. The OP clearly didn't expect this kind of nutty stuff when she started going, though, and I am happy enough as a heathen to not go through a series of nasty little surprises like this to find one I like for her.

Mmm, this priest's argument feels like a segue into criticisms of homosexuality. I got into a discussion about gay marriage with my old boss and she actually used the argument, "what's next? people can marry ice cream because they love it?"

There are varying degrees of love
LOL!!! I love these gay marriage arguments. It goes with "what's next? Are people going to start marrying their dogs???!!!!"
Um, no. We just want to keep it so humans can marry each other, dumbass.
yeah that's weird. I wouldn't really think twice if he was all "when you say you hate someone, or tell them to shut up, or push someone down or be mean" it's sand paper..
but I've never ever been taught/told whatever that you shouldn't explain your feelings.

that is bizarre. Weird enough that I'd have to say something to the rector about it. That's a shame it's an Episcopal church. I did a lot of church hunting and the Episcopal church I found is the best church I've ever been to. They're so open minded and liberal about so much. I can't imagine a sermon like this.

I know - we attended an Episcopal church in the past and it was great - very open-minded and liberal and a positive change from my very Catholic upbringing. But we moved over the summer and now live about 25-30 minutes away from that church. This was a complete disappointment compared to our previous experience. I know the drive to our old church isn't that long, but it's really inconvenient and I can see us not going regularly because of it.

this discussion took a turn.
i wasn't thinking anything about homosexuality and i didn't see it mentioned in cleo's post.
i agree there are varying degrees of love, but i still think it's often used in place of "really like".

I have deep and serious affection for this clip - but I don't necessarily love it
Moxie, I wasn't implying your comments were is some way referecing the arguments against gay marriage, it just reminded me of a conversation I had along those lines that more or less started with the misuse of the term love
