I usually try to rinse them but that feels like it isn't doing much. I'd rather just cut them up and add them to what I'm having but worry about pesticides or bacteria. What do you guys do?
Green onions are tube-shaped. How do you peel off layers?
There was a huge salmonella outbreak several years ago that prompted Taco Bell to permanently stop putting green onions on their nachos & stuff. They def need to be washed.
If the onions were straight from the farm I would wash, but the ones at the store are always so clean. What is a little rinsing going to do to bacteria anyway? You aren't using soap or really hot water are you?
There is usually a very thin piece on the outside. The easiest way to get it off is to take the lowest green stem and pull it off. If you buy the ones at a regular grocery store there's a good chance they've already removed it. If you've never bought them fresh or grown them yourself this probably all sounds foreign. lol
Nope. But I don't wash any produce. We never did it growing up, so it always seemed excessive/paranoid to me. As an adult, I now see it as a legit thing to do, but since I went my whole life without, I never remember to do it.
Can someone PIP? We've picked green onions from my ILs' garden, & they just look like this. I don't typically use the root; just the green tubes. Where is the peeling happening?
Our Meijer only sells green onions that are pre-washed in bags that zip shut (like a Ziploc). So we usually don't wash them again, though I always peel the shortest green piece off. But that's because I think that piece looks weird, not because I think it's dirty.
So if the grocery store already peeled off a layer, do I just rinse? For those of you washing, what do you wash with? For other things like berries and grapes, I let them sit briefly and maybe agitate them in cold soapy water, then rinse. I could do that with these and just make sure I rinse really well. I'm so glad I asked this. I didn't realize how bad it would be not to wash them!
I grow them in my garden, so when I pick them they are dirty...so yes, I always wash them. I don't usually try to peel off a layer of the white onion part at the bottom, but sometimes one kind of just comes off when I'm getting rid of the dirt. I do use both the white and green parts.
I always rinse them. I often find a bit of soil trapped inside. I cut the bottom off and any top parts that are a little wilted looking and rinse water through them. A good shake gets the water out from the inside easily.
