I have overtipped and let it go because if I didn't read the bill or do the math right, that's on me. I also wouldn't have given it back in the OP's situation because she had already tipped out everyone she works with. I actually really hate minimum tips, and I passively aggressively react to it by never tipping more than what's included, but seriously . . . If you can't be bothered to know within 20% what your bill should be, you shouldn't run around making other people's lives harder after the fact.

Thanks for all the responses... Like I said had he come back, or even called back, that night I would have returned the extra. I would have been annoyed but returned it. A day or two later and that money was already claimed as my income and dispersed amongst the bar and bussers. I agree that it would have been nice for the restaurant to compensate him in some way but really can't remember if they did or not.
I haven't, but I would never ask for it back. My sister accidently gave an eighty something dollar tip because she handed the waiter a $100 instead of a $20 once. We still laugh about it and she never once considered asking for it back.
If I made the tipping mistake then it is my mistake and I would just live with it. If your restaurant owners/managers felt it should have been returned then the restaurant itself should have paid the customer, seems like they were pretty short-sighted as far as both their customer and their employee(s).

I've overtipped and never gone back for it. Once, a colleague of mine took a group to a restaurant and didn't realize the gratuity was added to the bill, (many beers were involved, I assume) so he added 20%, which is the maximum allowed by our organization. When the receipt was submitted for reimbursement, the finance office called him and said he either had to get the extra $$ back or cover it himself, so he had to call the restaurant. I'm sure they weren't pleased, but they refunded it.
As a customer I would never ever ask for it back. In your shoes, with a defiant customer showing up and demanding it - I would give it back. I'd be pissed, but I wouldn't take a hard core stand over it. They clearly didn't intend to double tip you, and they realized what they did. Arguing over it makes you look petty in the face of their ridiculous demand to return it.
