Over the last year, we've paid off all of H's student loans and all of the credit cards. It's ah-mazing. Excellent timing too considering H's lack of employment.
I tried mint, but it kept getting my accounts screwed up. We were just looking at DH's account this weekend and I nearly fell over when it said we spent over 8k in restaurants in the last 6 months. WTF? We hardly ever eat out, but upon further investigation it included our wedding reception in the total and all our eating out in Hawaii plus some random things like gas stations?

That's amazing, Chirp! How is your H's job search going?
I just started using Mint last month. Honestly, I'm in LUST with it. It makes me happy to see all my ducks in a row. I keep telling myself last month was a test run and this month I will do so much better.

Ha.
He has one really good lead that we're waiting to hear on. The company is notoriously slow at the hiring process though. H knows the hiring manager's boss (he's actually one of H's references) so I'm hoping that one turns out well.
In the mean time, he's interviewing for other positions just so he's not left high and dry just in case the one he wants doesn't work out. He keeps getting either he's overqualified or they want to see more job experience (he was at his last job for 9.5 years and has been in the field for 11 years, so he has plenty of experience) or they decided not to fill the position. It's a really weird job market for IT right now.

I'll have my fingers crossed for you guys.
I know what you mean by the job market being weird. I'm in a technical field and I'm finding the same sort of answers.

I'm putting myself on a spending freeze for the rest of the month. I bought an umbrella stroller ($30 on sale from $50) and a high chair (eBay! $160 for a brand new $300 chair) and a bunch of clothes for me and A. Must slow down! Must saaaaaave the moneh!
We just got a costco membership and have spent a LUDICROUS amount of money there. I mean, over the long haul we'll save over $100/year on kcups alone, but when you're shelling out $35 for a box of 80 (plus everything else) it adds up to a pretty large upfront expenditure.
On the upside though, H calculated our 401K stuff this morning, and we're looking goooood. Like, by the time he retires we'll be able to live large off the interest alone good. Though I'm sure MM would be horrified by the piddly little 'middle class' amount, heh.
Isn't it nice to get rid of student loan debt? Paying a mortgage every month really sucks when you don't have a house.
Muddled, this anti-education attitude HAS to stop. An education is exactly like a house: it provides comfort and shelter, and you can sleep in it. Plus, education can teach you how to BUILD a house. Win-win!
Thanks, but I stopped looking over Christmas. I got burnt out. I'm not ready to start looking again, even though I know I should.
LOL. Sounds like H. It's been a little over 2 months and he's getting fed up. But, he hates the unemployment process and just being unemployed in general, so he's reluctantly chugging along.

We clearly have the wrong kind of education in this family. Somehow, the wind blows right through our fancy diplomas.

H came home last night with a new job possibility. I'm not sure how I feel about it. It doesn't change my plans, but in some ways it may make them easier... In others, it could really be a PITA. I'm researching like a fiend now to gather as much info on it as I can so I can plan accordingly. We'll find out in a couple of weeks whether or not it's going to happen.
And we spend a shitton on groceries. I don't feel bad about it, though, since we seldom eat out and waste next to no food.
We also may or may not have something of a TP/paper towels/Cascade/Tide/Ziploc bag stockpile in the garage because I am obsessed with stocking up on expensive staples when the brands I like go on sale.

I do this too! I think running out of TP is quite possibly one of my worst fears. If it's on sale, I buy it.
Oh, to have storage space. I buy TP when we are on the very last roll and then I have to curse Target for always being out of the 4 and 6 packs of the TPs I like.

Me too. DH is always saying, "Why do we need so much TP? We're not out of paper towels yet, why did you buy these?? I have anxiety about running out of these things too starrie.
