It's time for me to invest in some quality foundation. I think I'm going to try the Tarte amazonian clay stuff, but I'm wondering if I can return it if I get it home and hate it.

From my understanding from my sister, they take returns on anything. She is known to buy their stuff from Marshall/TJMaxx and return it in the store, obviously w/o a receipt. It's it's a really old item, they'll even go into the system and look for it and give her what they sold it at. Shady as fuck.

I bought some stuff at Sephora for DD and DDIL for Christmas, I asked if they would need a gift receipt or anything if they wanted to return or exchange the items and the woman said not at all, they know it's their stuff and they will return or exchange it w/out a receipt. I don't know if this is true, the girls liked what I got them and both kept it.

I don't like your sister.
Yup, like I said shady as fuck.
She once bought 3 or 4 of the same item from Marshalls really cheap and tried returning them one at a time. I guess the 2nd time she went in they gave her a hard time so she said she would "go look for the receipt." She then asked my mom to go and return one of them for her. Luckily, my mom said no. I'm not sure if she still does it or not, I found out about it from my mom with that one incident.
I used to shop religiously at Sephora for the majority of my health and beauty products. If you try a new foundation and hate it, they'll take it back. If you use half the foundation, they'll still take it back.
The last time I bought something I had never tried before, the associate helping me said that as long as you don't use the whole product and then try to claim you didn't like it, they will take it back....

They're also really generous with samples - they have those little pots that they'll fill with at least a few uses worth of product if you wanted to try it out that way instead.

I don't shop there often at all, but the few times I have, I've been pleased. They were generous with the samples so I could try at home for a few days and be sure. And the one time the foundation didn't work out at all after I gave it a week or so, they took it back no questions asked (I did have the receipt, but was told I didn't really need it).
They are great with returns... I love the Tarte foundation, I use it daily. Unless you are already super oily, I recommend using a substantial moisturizer prior to applying it. The clay can be very drying if your skin is not well hydrated.
