I too need suggestions for this. We aren't going to the Derby but have been invited to a derby party to watch it so I will need a hat for that probably.

target has a lot of cute, wide-brimmed hats right now. get one, hit the craft store and get some thick satin ribbon, a big flower, and some feathers. a little time and some hot glue, and you're done!
this is my "derby hat" i made for a tea party bridal shower my bridesmaids threw.

Don't DIY unless you are going to be in the infield. Anything goes in the infield. Vineyard Vines is the big sponsor. I think it would stand out too much in the stands unless you are an actual artist and can create something amazing. Derby hats are serious business for women and men. I'm going to grab some pictures when I go into L-ville this week at the department stores. They put them on all of the mannequins in the department stores this time of year. I told a some people I'd post them as soon as I can get them.
If you can wait until you get into the city and have the time the Steinmart at St. Matthews has a huge hat section around the $50 range. Badgley Mischka makes great fascinators in that range. Macy's in L-Ville carries them and they look just as good as the higher priced ones at places like Saks. Here's one from Nordstrom that looks like a lot of what is in town. The mesh stuff like the one below and feathers are big there. Silk flowers are not in anymore.

Dude, my budget is less than $50--do you think I'm NOT going to be in the infield?? Good call though. I think I'll look at the Nordstrom one and others in stores around my area. Doubt we'll have time to find one once I'm there because we're staying in IN, not L-ville. I should check out the store where I got my NYE fascinator.
You'll be good in the infield. A lot of people have no idea about the cost of the hats that go to Derby unless they live in the area. A lot of women buy their hat and take it to shop. Shopping during Derby Season is a blast to see what people are wearing. There's no such thing as too much at the Derby. The parties start 2 weeks before the race and go day and night. Unless you're flying into Indy, you'll have to drive through the entire city to cross the bridge and St. Matthews shopping is 10 minutes from the airport and not far from Indiana. If time would allow, I'd hit Steinmart or Macy's across the street to keep from having to pack an outrageous hat and worry about it getting crushed.
The Vineyard Vines Whalestock tent is a good time. They are a major sponsor. We had friends hanging out there in the past that loved it and were Derby virgins. I'm pretty sure it's in the infield since they said anyone can afford Derby (which is true) when they got back and were talking to us.

Haha, awesome. Glad I'll be known as the scum in the infield
Truth be told, we could do tickets but not everyone in the group can so it wasn't even a question about getting infield tickets. I think it'll be a good time regardless. I'm going with my friend and her college friends, only one of whom I've met, so it should be a crazy girls' weekend.
The infield is where the real party is at and anything goes! There will be people in everything there. VV usually passes out giant pink whale hats to the crowd and gets up and coming bands to play. You can easily dress up in the infield, but you won't have to worry about being underdressed there at all. You'll have a blast especially if it's a girl's trip!
Just wanted to tell you that I went a few years ago and the dress you picked is PERFECT! I bought a hat on ebay made by "Mr. Song Millinery". The hats are awesome and perfect for the Derby!

Awesome, thanks! We have a steeple chase here in NJ that my friend said the infield is comparable to but nicer. I actually won't step foot in the infield at our steeple chase actually because it's too, um, douchey? We get a bunch of NYC 21 yr olds who dress up in bowties and vomit all over so I hope this infield is a bit better. Southerners generally hold their booze better (at least I hope so!)
I'll be wearing a sundress from Old Navy and either flats or sandals. No heels for me if I'm drinking for quite some time! What do people do if the weather sucks? Boots?
Some form of boots or even wellies. I'd probably do whatever is comfortable at that point since it can get muddy. While we've been in the area, there's never been really bad weather (going on 6 years). My friends who are usually the first to leave a party even stay at Derby in the infield until the end. People in L-Ville are generally laid back. Even the Buckcherry show there I went to in that city with a friend only had 2 asshole encounters (1 photo bomber and a guy who wouldn't leave us alone, but his friend told him to move along). I expected a lot more since they aren't exactly family entertainment.
I'm in the road so I don't have great pics buts I made a hat for a derby party we had last year for less than $5. Target dollar spot hat, dollar tree flowers and ribbon from michaels

Just wanted to throw out to check your local Marshall's and TJ MAxx for hats, that is where I usually find mine this time of year. Be prepared for the weather and the crowds are insane!! I think this is the first year I am skipping it-last year it was a 100 degrees outside and years before RAIN and a muddy as mess!! You can not take in your own beer/drinks but there are great ways to do it and get away with it!! Sounds like there are some other seasoned Derby people on here, feel free to message me with any questions! Wear comfy shoes for sure!! Also if you plan on drinking the Mint Juleps or other drinks and want to keep your glasses take a tote bag to carry them in! Here is a picture from last year, excuse my sweaty hair, by this point I was over it and so hot!! Dress was from Target and the hat I found at TJ Maxx and then I just wore my sparkly silver flip flops from Old Navy.

We have always been in the infield, but my FAVORITE place to hang out is in the paddock area-close to drinks, and you get to see all the horses before they head out to the race. The only way you can see the race is if you are lucky to get by the fence in the infield and see a quick blur go by or if you are in the stands in a seat. otherwise you have to watch the race on a screen. They have a huge screen to watch the race on in the paddock area which is where I am in this picture (actually) standing behind them) you get to see all the big time Trainers and watch the horses as they go through the tunnel! Not to mention you are walking around on pavement all day versus the infield where it can get nasty and gross especially if it rains! You must post pics of your hat and outfit.
