“Life is not orderly. No matter how we try to make it so, right in the middle of it lose a leg, fall in love, drop a jar of applesauce.” - Natalie Goldberg
Nope - Our lab would get the sh*ts if we let him eat any kind of people food, even just a plate lick. Our other dog is scared to death of plates/dishware makes it easier!
My cats will lick my plate if I set it down on our coffee table. Our cocker spaniel's favorite chore is licking the dirty plates as we load the dishwasher. I don't think it's a big deal since everything gets washed before it's used.

I don't because there are rarely leftovers in my house lol. If we do have leftovers we give them to the dog in his bowl but that is just to prevent begging. At my mom's the dogs all go to town on the dinner plates and then they get washed in the dishwasher it isn't that big a deal.

Not every day, but sometimes when we have treats I put the plate down for him to lick. I'm surprised to see so many people be horrified by this. Of all the gross things my dog does, this ranks pretty low.
See, for me it's just that Cali is so big and clumsy. She has broken dishes in the past by slamming them into walls with her nose trying to get the very last crumb.
We try not to give our dog people food but every once in awhile, I will put the plate down so she can lick it clean. At that point, she's pretty much trying to lick smells off a plate. The cats are worse, you turn your backs on them and all of a sudden there is a fur ball licking your plate.
I have to admit that sometimes if I make a casserole and there is some hard to get off stuff left in the dish, I set it on the floor and let the dog clean it. Her tongue is a fabulous scrubber and she can get the hard gunk off. When I do that, afterwards I soak the cooking dish in a bleach/water solution and then wash them as normal. Not that I'm overly concerned about it but in the event anyone ever comes over for dinner or I give someone something, I want to make sure the dish is CLEAN beyond soap and the bleach makes me feel better.
All that said, sometimes I drop food on the floor and I pick it up and eat it. My floor is probably 10x dirtier than my dogs tongue.
No, they have sensitive stomachs and it would give them the runs. My dad used to put the plates down for the basset hounds growing up and yelled "pre-wash!"

I'm loling at everyone who is horrified by this. We will occasionally let Heidi lick plates if it's not something that will upset her stomach. I don't see what the big deal is. The plates go straight into the dishwasher where they are cleaned with soap and scalding hot water.

I think DH would divorce me, lol. He's not a die-hard dog lover anyway, and we have a series of compromises -- no dogs on the furniture, no dogs in bed, no dogs fed from the table -- in order to be a dog-having household.
My dogs have sensitive tummies anyway. Regular plate licking would inevitably result in 3 a.m. puke clean-up at some point.
My tall dog does occasionally steal something from a plate that has been left on the table, but it's definitely not something that's "allowed".
