...by a triathlete who started swimming with my masters group a couple months back.
I've never liked this guy. He's very full of himself and likes to talk up his running at swim practice. He can work it into ANY conversation. Oh, you ran a half last weekend? Let me tell you how amazing I am at halfs! Wasn't it awful what happened in Boston? Oh yes, insert long story about how he was going to try to BQ, was sure he could do it, but his tri training went too well so he didn't feel like it, and aren't we all glad he didn't because he'd be there...
Anyway, I digress. It's masters swimming. Either come or don't, but start swimming and stop bragging. I don't know how good he actually is at running (times), he might be a legitimately good runner. I also don't know how good he is at tri's. I only see him at the pool, where he's just ok.
But seriously? "Wannabe"? Who says that? To anybody? Let alone, somebody who spent this weekend doing...
Fri - run 5 miles Sat - bike 50 miles + run 2 miles bricked Sun - 4k yds swim + run 10 miles
To me that feels pretty effing legit. I'm exhausted!
I know I shouldn't take him too seriously, because he was, in his expert opinion, diagnosing my sore shoulders ("it's from your aerobars.") (I don't have aerobars) and telling me that it's ok, I'll recover quickly "because I'm in my 20s." (I'm 31.)
I can't stand people like that. Why try to belittle someone like that? That's one of the reasons why I like this place, no one tries to make you feel small because you aren't as fast, strong or experienced as they are.
That's so damn irritating. If you know his name, look him up on athlinks or google his race results or something and then if he sucks you have the satisfaction of knowing it. (Not that I have ever done this before or anything...)
(and yeah, racing him in the pool wouldn't even be fun for me. I don't like decimating people that badly.)
I would look to see how good he actually is at running/tris if I knew his last name - but I don't. Oh well. I figure if he was that amazing I'd know him by reputation.
As usual he got out of practice early. After he left one of my friends commented that he heard the wannabe remark and thought the guy was pretty lucky he didn't eat a kickboard over it. I mostly opted not to dignify it with a response.
I think it's sort of unique to individual sports - this need to find excuses for your own personal shortcoming (equip, etc), and to belittle others to create this super-ego for yourself. I find a fair number of the people in my "tri-circle" to be like this. Interestingly enough, it's usually not the fastest ones.

he has never BQed so even though he thinks he can, his running experience is limited.
Honestly, if he just "ok" in the pool then there is NO way for him to be great in triathlons. A top age grouper? Sure. Winning? No. We talk about this a lot (okay, i talk about this a lot, lol). you can't win if you can't swim.
he is obviously feeling insecure. I bet he spent a lot of money on a fancy bike and averages 20mph. Just my guess (hot)
Ummm, screw him. I AM a legitimate triathlete and your weekend workout would leave me crying for my mom!! Just tell him "I get it, you are compensating for the shrinkage the cold water has produced but seriously STFU".

I might have taken the real mature adult route and splashed him with water, beat him with a kickboard, pulled his legs to swim past him, kicked him in the nuts or E) all of the above. I am a mouthy asshole lately so I would not have been able to keep my mouth shut.
Its funny because the ones who comment on me being too slow and say that raising the time allowed for a half from 3 hrs to 4 hrs would cheapen it and I just need to train harder always crumble when i point out they ain't breaking any records myself.
So maybe next time ask him if he can do any olympic qualifying time and if not he needs to STFU, because relatively speaking he's a "wannabe" as well
