I grab the latest expiration date I see, but don't "dig". I'll move the gallon in front, at most, to get to the second one back. But honestly, where I shop all of the milk in the case on any given day tends to have the same expiration date anyway, that's how often they're restocking.
I grab the one with the latest expiration date out of the ones I can see. I don't dig.
This is what I do. We go through so much milk so quickly in this house. I don't think I've poured out milk from going past date since DD started drinking milk.
I work for a grocery store and I have literally seen people pull all my milk off the self to get a carton with 1 extra day on it (13 days away instead of 12 days) it is ridiculous and one of my biggest pet peeves. We aren't even allowed to have milk on our self that has less then 10 days shelf life (company policy) and I am always having people ask if we have any longer dates...
We buy half gallons, and my Trader Joe's conveniently faces the cartons expiration date-side out, so I can easily see all the dates. Edit: I buy organic, but not ultra-pasteurized like PPs mentioned, so the expiration date is usually 9-14 days out. I can't stand ultra-pasteurized milk. If there's a significant difference, I'll definitely grab one from the back, which is about four cartons in. So I'm kind of a milk-maid, and I've also wondered if people judge me for it.
SS - We buy 3-4 gallons of organic at a time. That's usually all the store has stocked, and organic expiration dates are like 3 months+ out.
This is crazy to me. I saw someone else say 6 weeks on their milk. We buy milk from a local farm (sold at grocery stores), and the milk comes in glass bottles. It is not organic, but I think they try to limit antibiotics, etc. The furthest out I have ever seen a date is 12-14 days. And it usually does go bad within a few days past the expiration date (my H won't even smell it if it's past the date, he just throws it out).
One time I did buy a paper carton of milk at Target and couldn't believe the date was almost 4 weeks out. I think it may have been organic but I don't recall (Horizon Farms maybe?).
I would have thought organic milk would expire quicker. Kind of like buying fresh bread from the bakery versus packaged hamburger buns that contain preservatives.
Can someone explain this to me? Does the milk really taste good the whole time, even if it's been open for a month? Does it last longer in a paper carton?
Ultra-pasteurization. It grosses me out. I'd rather buy "conventional" milk than that stuff. I think technically you're supposed to use it within ~10 days after opening, but yeah, unopened it lasts an ungodly long time.

Interesting, thanks for the explanation. I had no idea. That seems foreign to me that milk could last for so long without spoiling. I love the milk we get locally, it tastes great, and we just try to buy what we need since we know we only have about 10 days to use it up. It's also pricier and only sold in up to half gallons, so that helps to limit what we buy.
So is organic milk always ultra-pasteurized or just some of it?
I don't because I have a toddler and we can easily get through milk before whatever expiration.
However, before I discovered I was lactose intolerant, I was a digger. I've never really liked milk so it went through it really slowly (used it for things like cereal or baking or whatever)

Only some, like Horizon (which I would never buy anyway because of their past practices), some kinds of Organic Valley, and a lot of store brands. Organic Valley also produces organic milk via their co-op local farms that are not ultra-pasteurized. The organic house brand at TJ's (at least my local ones) is not ultra-pasteurized.
I buy my milk at the dairy, so the stuff out is typically today or yesterday's milk. Plus I have a teenager; I haven't thrown away milk in a decade or more.
When I managed a supermarket, we held back "new" product to avoid this.
Is the organic stuff ultra pasturized? That seems like a very processed product sell by protocol.
I feel like no one grabs the 1st carton, so it gets warm from the door opening and closing. I don't want milk that has been warming for the past 3 hours.
we go through about 2-3 gallons a week so I don't really worry about expiration date. I buy at TJs and Costco and both have expiration dates further out than the grocery store

H drinks milk so much that we never get anywhere near the expiration date, so I never bother checking. Back when I was only buying milk for myself I always checked for the latest date though.
I will scan for first couple of rows to see if there is a later expiration date. We buy half gallons or smaller and rarely use it all before the expiration date.
