For example, I play the piano. And I could play the same piece 432 times in a row perfectly, but if you asked me what the first chord was I'd be like "Uh..."
I'm the same way with the piano. And, if I start a song I can play it no problem. But if you ask me to start in the middle? I'll have all kinds of troubles getting through it.
I think this could be more of a muscle-memory thing, like when basketball players go to shoot a free throw and you'll see that they do the same routine every time - take a big breath, crack their neck, dribble 2 times, and then shoot, for example.
I have a partially photographic memory, but I can't just recall what I saw, I have to actually "look" for it in my head and "re-read" it off the picture in my head. If that makes sense. With numbers (math, patterns, etc) I've always just known them. I can't really explain it, but it is just in my head. I believe someone once called me out on TN for saying that :/
If I want/need to remember it I can remember the actual text in a textbook at the same location on the page as it is in the textbook, or in notes that I have written out of the text book. But if I am reading something and I am uninterested, I won't remember it. I cannot learn something but watching someone else do it. It will never click in my brain this way. Well, not never, but it will be hard for me to remember.
Like on an exam? I'd just close my eyes and picture where a certain thing was written. Sometimes I have to work a little to conjure up the image. Like, I'll remember that the information on cell signaling was written towards the bottom of the page.....outside column.......THERE IT IS.
ETA: I have gotten in trouble before on exams, mostly when I was younger, because I can answer questions verbatim with the text from the book because I am reading it in my head during the test. Looks like I'm cheating. I had to learn to switch it into my own words.
this. photographic memory. I picture what the actual page looked like that I read the information off of. or the powerpoint slide, or the what scene in the movie I saw the info in... etc etc. I'm a very visual learner (had to be, since I'm hearing impaired).
I don't have any specific tips/techniques I use, but I tend to naturally associate things which then helps with recall if that makes any sense. I also have a bizarre ability to recall "pictures" in my head of certain places/events/things. Really helps when H can't find his keys/sunglasses/whatever. I can usually tell him wherever the random place I last saw the item was - and there it is.
