i tried on those high waisted bottom, b/c i was also intrigued and ordered them. i didn't love them. they were a little too much suit and i was worried that my tankini would ride up if it wasn't directly on my skin - b/c it would be annoying to have to pull down the top every time you move (and i am chasing after a toddler).
so i returned them. i decided to buy these instead - just got them on friday and I LOVE THEM. they are not as high as they look in the picture, but they are high enough that it keeps things in place and smooth. the band is the best - i cannot stand a control top band b/c all it does is push my fat in another direction, lol. these are structured without being sausage-tight.
and as for the $165 for a bathing suit thing -- i don't think there's anything wrong with that. i personally need underwire in my suits AND, i prefer a thicker material AND it needs to be cute. i can't just walk into old navy and buy some cheap ass piece of crap. doesn't work. if it fits and you feel great, it's worth the money.
I was looking at those bottoms as an alternative. The best part about Land's End is their return policy - I can return it (from Canada) for $8.95 and they will refund duties/taxes/shipping/item price, plus they'll ship whatever you get to replace your returned item for free. So, if I don't like the bottoms I got, I have options. Thanks for the suggestion!!
I'm of the opinion that bathing suits are a piece of attire that are really worth spending money on if it makes you feel good wearing it. So few suits are able to do that, I don't really care about the expense of the ones that can. Assuming you're not going into debt over it, I say go for it.

UPDATE.
So Land's End is having 40% swimwear, but it doesn't apply to previous orders (even though my top hasn't even shipped yet - backordered til June 13th). My bottoms shipped already, so I couldn't get money back on those, but I spoke to CS and canceled the top and re-bought it for cheaper, saving me $40!!
Yippeeeee! This bathing suit only set me back $125 instead of the original $165!
