I mentioned last week I have been interviewing for three jobs. I got a call today at 4:30 with an offer!!! It was very unexpected because for this one I have only had one interview. My company usually has two rounds, so when she called I assumed it would be to set up second rounds. I am thrilled cause my manger is crazy cakes and I need to get away from the toxic work environment. I have wanted to quit so many times and SAH, I hope a new job will make me be able to think more clearly about if I should SAH or work.
The offer was a lateral move with a 9.1% raise, I countered and asked for $5K more. I have never really countered before and it was awkward, but I feel good about it. Fingers crossed I get the amount I want, but I will take it either way (it is my favorite of the three).
Yay for getting away from the crazy!
UPDATE - The hiring manager called and gave me the extra $5K!!!!!!!!!!! Man, I am on cloud nine right now :-). Thank you for all of the congratulations.
Can you talk about the process of negotiating salary? At my last position, they offered me the high end of their range that they told me they were offering (which seemed unusual) w/o asking me my last salary, and it ended up being 40% more than what I made so I obviously took it! I have no idea how to negotiate and what to expect. Any advice?
Wow, a 40% jump, that's awesome!! My move is an internal move, so they know my current salary. I got a 15% bump.
I stole my negotiation strategy from a post I read on mm. I was caught off guard with the offer, since I had only had one interview. I thought the next step would be second rounds. So this was off the cuff.
She made her offer and I thanked her, she said is that an acceptance? I said no, that I needed to think about it. I mentioned the other role I have interviewed for, and that I was hoping for a promotion. In light of it not being a promotion I said I was looking for a larger bump in salary. (Here's the part I stole from mm) I said that statistically women don't negotiate their salary and men end up getting paid more. I told her how much I was wanting, and she said that requires special approval but she would ask her manager.
While I had to wait I felt a little embarrassed for saying women don't ask for more money, but it is a fact, and I guess it worked :-).

Oh that's awesome. Good for you!
Yeah, the 40% bump was great and kind of unexpected. I went from being underpaid to being paid average for what I do, it was a surprise - I thought they would lowball me and I would have to fight for the higher end of what their range was. I am such a chicken when it comes to asking for more $. I have a friend who has always negotiated more vacation time for herself as well as good salaries. Sigh...

Nice job! And it's so true, women don't usually ask for more money. Congrats!!! Nice way to start the weekend.
