I can't see the MLB doing this. Baseball is just such an inherently more kid-friendly sport that I think it would totally, totally kill their attendance.
@kcpokergal - yeah, we would never take our kids to a "real" game until they are...hmm, high school age. But we've talked about taking our older son to one of the mid-calendar, weekday preseason games, and try to sit up high to avoid the drunks. I knew I was old when I stopped thinking the crazy atmosphere was awesome and started lamenting that there was nowhere in the stadium that was kid-appropriate.
Yeah no way my kids get to go to more Ravens games than me and I only get to go like once a season (I'd rather watch them from home vs shelling out the $100 for a ticket and then pay for $9 bud lights). So for me, I don't really care about this policy for NFL games. NOW, if the Terps were to put out this policy I would be enraged. Those are extremely family friendly games and we do bring in a small backpack/diaper bag with extra clothes, blankets, etc...
I don't see MLB going in this direction..it's so family friendly and you can still bring outside food/water into the games (at least at Camden Yards you can bring in your own bag of peanuts and unopened bottle of water). I can't see them going this far
Welp, this might solve the ongoing debate of whether we'll take the kid to his first 49ers game this year...
We don't have anyone to watch him over a long weekend, like we did last season, and were planning to take him with us this year. But if he can't go, neither can we and yes, to take a two-year-old to a football game, you need more than a clutch bag.
He can stay at my house during the game.
Before my smartphone I could carry everything I need in my pockets. Now I own one pair of pants with pockets big enough for both my phone & keys. They're maternity pants & I plan on burning them asap.
I wonder if I can pick up a clear purse at Raider Image now?
I am a girly girl, but all I typically need is iPhone, wallet (or card case with cash/id/credit card), keys, and sunglasses/sunglasses case (because it is annoying to have to wear my sunglasses on the top of my head after dark). Lip balm is a plus. Regardless, that's way too much to fit in my pockets, and I don't even always have pockets. Probably way too much to fit in a clutch too (certainly too much if my wallet is involved).
If I were a pickpocketer, I'd be psyched about this rule. Girls typically can't fit much in pants pockets because their pants are too tight, and it is much easier to get things out of coat pockets.
This exactly. My keys and phone technically fit in pockets, but they look bad. And they pull down maternity pants.
I know sushi was being TIC, but I think this is really interesting given that the NFL has finally been paying attention and trying to grow the female market.
I'm less interested in the kid aspect because NFL games are way too fucking expensive for the attention span of someone not toilet trained.
Oh no - that was a personal thing against me cuz she thinks i'm a huge sexist.

Hmmm
You're going to try and convert him to a Raider baby, aren't you? That's just part of your plan... (And I have NO DOUBT you'll find a clear, tiny purse on sale at Raider Image and NFL Shop before August...)
I know my time in a stadium is fairly limited, but I can't see how you'd be comfortable bringing in a bigger bag than 12x6x12 anyway. The seats are small, the space under the seats is often dirty or wet (or gets wet from drink spills or whatnot) you are usually also juggling food and drinks you just bought. I guess I can see with kids you'd want something bigger - but if each person can bring their own 12x6x12 bag it seems they could still bring what they needed. Maybe I just hate stadiums.

The CLEAR bag can't be any larger than that. I mean, I'm a tiny purse person, but I wouldn't want to go to an NFL game w/o a kid with only what I can carry in my pockets. Do men realize girl pockets aren't big enough to carry anything?
Right so as I understand it, each person could still bring one of these and fill it up:
I'm not saying its not annoying to have to bring a whole nother sort of bag just for a game or that anyone really wants all their stuff seen. I'm just saying in terms of having enough bag space to take enough stuff to a game.
I can't believe people are actually upset by this.
And are we sure this is about terrorism and not about sneaking in booze?
And wasn't there a death at candlestick last year?
Because sneaking in booze is suddenly an issue and we haven't had a terrorist attack at a public sporting event recently that generated loads of talk about keeping people safe at such events?

Also uncontrolled amounts of alcohol plus sporting events can = violent encounters (like what I believe happened at a preseason game at candlestick last year) and I can see why the NFL would want to mitigate that.

Do you attend games?
People will still be able to sneak in booze in most climates since they'll be wearing coats during football season. A clear bag won't prevent that.
I'm not finding anything on the Candlestick Park death except deaths *near* Candlestick and violence that occurred during a preseason game between the 49ers and the Raiders in 2011 - none for which I sense that clear bags or no bags would have helped anything.
HJ, why wouldn't people be upset about this? For sports fans that happen to be women this is an issue. For sports fans that wanted to take their children to games (and some stadiums, seating areas are more fan friendly than others), this is an issue.
Hell, we look forward to our annual trip to SF like nobody's business. We were going to take our son to a game at Candlestick before it was torn down. That's seriously in jeopardy for us. Hell, if I'm willing to put the work in of taking my kid (And I accept I'd probably have to be walking the concourses with him), why can't I be able to do that, as long as I don't bother any other guest at the stadium? But if he needs a diaper change or to change his clothes, this policy keeps me from doing that. Thus, keeps me from going. Thus keeps my husband from going.
We've been lucky on our trips to Candlestick. The pre-game activities and events have been much more family-friendly than Dolphin Stadium (Or Sun Life or Pro Player or Land Shark or whatever it's called this week). And I can only comment on fans in SF vs. Miami, but trust me--the people we've met at Candlestick have been generally much nicer (and less drunk) than the people we've encountered at Dolphins games (hell, the last Fins game we actually went to was when SF was here a few years ago. And Miami's fans were complete and utter jerks).
I do remember there being a stabbing at Candlestick a few years ago when we were there for the game against Oakland...in the parking lot, so this policy wouldn't have even prevented that. Unless, of course, they're going to start screening every tailgate party in that lot.
I don't doubt it's about security, and smuggled items AND the ability to now market/sell "NFL approved bags", but still, it sucks all around for some of us that do like to attend games in person.
Those are HORRIBLE. Also, it is cold enough to wear those maybe 2 weeks out of the year here in Houston. So even if they were practical, they are still a ridiculous buy!

Yes! Booze is not the issue here! And it's not a new issue at all. Why on earth would the NFL suddenly crack down? This is about terrorism in the aftermath of the Boston Marathon and just general paranoia about people carrying, you know, BAGS. And THINGS.

I wouldn't do that! Probably. He might leave saying "go bears" though.
I haven't been to an NFL game since the 90s. But my grandparents had seasons tickets at the time to the 49ers and they were always scheming ways to bring their own alcohol into the stadium. Lol. I can see why the NFL would want to take hardline stance to prevent that.
I'm not sure why this ban means you can't go with a child. If your child still needs a diaper bag, can't you just use a clear plastic bag?

Also, that incident involved a preexisting dispute between parties. It likely would have occurred regardless of venue.

Actually, I think those are 12x6x16. They would be too big for the new rules. They will have to make them more like the size of a book bag tote to be 12x12x6. You can still fit most things in those, but do I really want to put my maxipads in a see-through ziplock in that bag? Seriously? I guess that is what the clutch sized bag is for. Although my clutch wallet cannot hold enough thin-sized maxis for tailgating and a full game.

And even if that's the case for Pete's sake that's not a inconsequential concern that merits the histrionics in here.

Um, how many clear plastic bags are we talking here? Diaper (or two)... wipes... formula or breast milk... burp cloth... snacks if they're eating solids... change of shirt/bottoms...
People will still be able to sneak in booze in most climates since they'll be wearing coats during football season. A clear bag won't prevent that.

My theory is actually that it does have to do with people sneaking in refreshments (both of the booze and non-booze variety). Yes, it's always been an issue, but I can just see some people sitting around a table in an office deciding that making it harder to sneak in items will drive up sales and help the bottom line.
I think taking action about snuck-in booze now is just as logical as taking action about terrorism, given that nothing was done following, say, the 1996 Olympic bombing.

Honestly, I have no idea because baby isn't here yet. I don't know exactly what a parent needs in their diaper bag yet and if even two 12x6x12 bags will be sufficient. I mean, we'll make it work but I will miss all the different compartments of my diaper bag.
We registered for a Giants diaper bag for H, maybe security will find it cute and let us go in with it lol.
