We have ours on year round. We have it timed though. During day when no one is home it will not turn on unless the house goes above 90. At 6pm it turns on and it goes down to about 73-75. We adjust it based on how we feel. It doesn't switch to 90 mode until like 8am.
We don't have central air. So we keep our only wall unit at 70, which brings most of the house to 76-78, and my room at 70. i close it at night because I can't sleep with the air blasting on me.
78 seems reasonable to me, but we only use our a/c when we feel like we are dying of heat.

Colorado and no a/c we have a whole house fan which runs at night. The house gets down around 63 and we close all the windows during the day and the downstairs rarely gets above 77, unless we have a string of 100 plus days. Today it was over 90, but the house is still 72. I can't imagine how well it would work if we had insulation in the walls.
