Or moms that leave one of their kids locked in a car when it ran out of gas and then walks to the gas station with the other to find someone and then returns to an empty vehicle.
Yes. My first gut reaction was rage, freaking rage, at the man who did this.
Then my next reaction was to be angry with the mother for handing her daughter over.
I can understand how it happened. I can. I see how this man conned this woman.
When we hear stories like this I think the first thing we jump to in our heads is "how could this have been prevented" because as parents and human beings we want this to never happen again, and that is where the judgment of the mother comes in. Because we want to believe that as parents we can protect our kids. But we can't always. In this situation I feel like there absolutely was better judgement she could have used. But it is done. And she will regret this decision every second, of every day of her life and that is enough. We (as a society) don't need to pile on her more.
What we should be concerned with is why this fucker was out and freely able to be preying on more innocent children.

Judging the Mom makes it easier for us to feel like our kids are safe. It's how are brains are conditioned. Well, not judging maybe but rationalizing why we would never be on that situation. It gives us a cushion of safety.
Or moms that leave one of their kids locked in a car when it ran out of gas and then walks to the gas station with the other to find someone and then returns to an empty vehicle.
Its not like this guy was wearing a "I'm a perv who's going to kill a kid" t-shirt.
Did the mom make a poor choice? Yes. Obviously. But we don't know all the details. Maybe she could see the Mcdonalds from the check out. Maybe she looked down to get her credit card and they were gone when she looked up. A mom taking her 3 kids to Walmart at 11pm makes me think she doesn't have the kind of life most of us have. Maybe she was an exhausted mom who thought a stranger was being kind. Maybe she is a loser and didnt think twice about befriending another loser. I don't know. I can only hope that its the former.
BUT this creep would've kidnapped the kid in the parking lot or followed them home and taken her from there. He befriended the mom, was not in disguise, and kidnapped her from a place with security cameras everywhere. I don't think he cares what happens to him since he knew he was going to be caught.
I can blame the mom for playing a part in what happened and also feel sad for her.

Does this mean you stand by you initial accusation (which, given the scant evidence we've seen so far, is completely baseless)? That makes me ill.
Or moms that leave one of their kids locked in a car when it ran out of gas and then walks to the gas station with the other to find someone and then returns to an empty vehicle.
how often do you think this happens?
As often as when mothers go to elaborate lengths to hire someone to murder their kid.
This is STILL alive? Seriously, choices have consequences. People notice that bad choices generally have bad consequences. Is it completely awful that this child was raped and killed because of her mom's terrible choice? YES! But I just can't get all ragey about someone pointing out it was a bad choice. I don't think that in and of itself is necessarily "bad".
Can we just leave it at people do really stupid shit sometimes and move on?
That is what you take home? People do really stupid shit? Not people do really evil shit? The mom's actions are more noteworthy than the motherfuckingasshole they have in custody?

From Huffington Post
UPDATE: Initial reports suggested that Charish Perriwinkle's mother allowed her daughter to go to McDonald's with Donald James Smith. The mother has now told Action News Jax that she did not realize Smith left with the girl.

She also noted that at first she thought the man was "creepy and annoying," but he seemed like he truly wanted to help her. "Part of me wanted to believe this was a blessing for my children," she said.

I totally agree. For whatever reason, this guy targeted this family and spent HOURS befriending them. If the mother had said no to McDs, I highly doubt that would have been the end of it. He would have looked for another opportunity.

I tend to not read initial report articles for this very reason. The media is more interested in being the first to "break" the big story than in getting their facts straight. Now, this woman is being portrayed as allowing her daughter to go off with a stranger, when that truly may not have been the case. Maybe she did, or maybe her daughter took off when her back was turned as she was unloading the cart, or maybe any other number of options.
I'm not defending Sounder in any way but Maybe she was coming from a place where we have all heard about news stories of parents selling their kids to the highest bidder or trading them for drugs, or dumping them on a neighbor. It's on our local news every few months. I don't think this was the case but with the Casey Anthony's, and Mom's on crack or whatever it does happen. I think maybe her reasoning was just stated too bluntly and st an awful and sensitive time.
The media is constantly reporting about girls sold into the sex industry in Seattle. It's on huge billboards and on the news. There was even a documentary on it. Rape for profit.
Not sure if this sort of thing is happening all over but it'll definitely in this area.
"Typically known for coffeehouses and cloud cover, Seattle has also gained another title: 3rd most prostituted children in the nation. Experts estimate that there are up to 300,000 underage girls sexually trafficked nationally every year. These girls (many as young as 12 and 13 years old) are bought and sold for the pleasure of men all over the country. This isn’t just happening in 3rd world countries, it’s happening right here in our own backyards. It has been said that prostitution and rape are two sides of the same coin. None of these little girls want to be out in the freezing cold night after night to get into cars with strange men; they are trapped inside a system of coercion and fear that gives them no hope for a normal childhood – much less a healthy future." The oh so loved "This." Could someone please point out the big tattoo on his forehead that said "I'M A CHILD MOLESTER AND A SEX OFFENDER!!!" No? Amazing.
Taking the time to talk about how horrible the mom is reminds me of he asswagons I de-friended on my FB feed who could not stop talking about "How Dare the parents in the movie theater shooting take their kids to see Batman, and it was too late, and blah blah blah." Is it really so important to sit around and feel all "I'm such an awesome-er parent" smug? Sheesh.
It just crossed my mind. There has been such bad news on parents doing things to their kids lately that is just where my mind went first. You have the Powell boys, Sky Metalwala, Kaylee Anthony and so on. I don't know why it was the first thing I thought about it just was.
It was a busy day at work. I haven't been able to post much.

But spare me the "don't place blame on the mom, she's in enough pain" JUST STOP. she blames herself and I AGREE WITH HER. I simply agree with her. her fucked up choices (hello, all of them could have been killed jumping into that van)....I mean, if we're gonna continue to go off on imaginary tangents....
and it's surprising to me that elle is looking the other way; We both grew up in or near the bay area in the 80's / 90's and how many kids went missing?? I still know all their names, all of them; and only jaycee came back.
if it feels weird and creepy; it's WEIRD AND CREEPY. I hope they execute the sick pervert motherfucker who took that poor baby but I will never ever pardon the mom. sorry

What does this have to do with it? She still let her child go to McDonald's with the dude.
No, she didn't. She said that she did not know her daughter went to McDonald's with him. She thought her daughter stayed with her.
"UPDATE: Initial reports suggested that Charish Perriwinkle's mother allowed her daughter to go to McDonald's with Donald James Smith."
EDIT: I see what you are saying. I misinterpreted what this meant. I didn't realize that she is now stating that she didn't give he daughter permission to go to McDonalds with the guy.
