Her name was really Charish Lilly Perriwinkle? Wow. I hope the news is wrong and that the mom really didn't let him take her. And why was the kid at Walmart at 11pm?
This is so sad.
Kooshball- you obviously have never been in a Walmart at 11pm. It would amaze you.
angelaa73 I agree that the mom made a horrible decision. Not just a bad parenting decision, a bad decision all around (piling her whole family into his van?! Even after thinking he was creepy?) what was she thinking?
I think I'm trying to envision scenarios that would make the incident less horrible in my own mind. So that I don't have to think about the alternatives. Its too sad as it is.
he girl's mother, Rayne Perrywinkle, told Action News Jax that she and her daughter met Smith Friday evening at a dollar store. Her two other children, ages 4 and 5, were also with her, according to Jacksonville.com.
Smith overheard the mother saying she couldn't afford to buy her daughter a dress, and offered to help her out. She says Smith told her his wife had a Walmart gift card, and could meet them at Walmart and use the card to buy items for the family.
They headed to the Walmart in Smith's van. Once there, Perrywinkle says Smith kept insisting they were waiting for his wife. At one point, he said he was heading to the store's McDonald's. The mother says she did not realize her daughter was going with him.
She also noted that at first she thought the man was "creepy and annoying," but he seemed like he truly wanted to help her. "Part of me wanted to believe this was a blessing for my children," she said.
CORRECTION: The Amber alert for the missing child, as well as initial police sources, incorrectly spelled her name "Charish Lilly Perriwinkle." The story has been updated to reflect the correct spelling of her name, "Cherish Lily Perrywinkle."
So, essentially, this man stalked them and the mother said ok, he's no longer a creep since he's gonna buy us some shit, let's go with him? No creepy stranger wants to spend their money on your kids, lady. This is just so sad and I cannot imagine the terror that little girl must have felt in those final minutes.
What a bizarre situation. She and her 3 small kids got into a strangers van at night to go to Walmart...and he actually took them all to Walmart. You'd think he would have ditched them (the mom and 2 of the kids) along the way to avoid the cameras/having to separate the mom from the daughter. I just can't wrap my brain around this at all.
I will never get over the time I thought my son (8 years old) was kidnapped. We were at restaurant about an hour from our house and we let him go to the bathroom alone (stupid!!!). The bathroom was at the front of the restaurant. Long story short he never came back to our table, 911 was called, everyone was searching for him. He had locked himself in a single toilet bathroom that we did not know about because there was a main bathroom at the front that had several stalls that we assumed he went into. In the time he was "missing" I literally almost passed out. I realized I am not good in a crisis because I seriously felt like I could not breath. When he was finally found I cried harder than I have ever cried in my life. I have never felt relief like that. It was insane. If anything had happened to him I would have never been able to forgive myself for letting my guard down and letting him go alone.
My heart just sank. that is just awful. WHY did this mom let this kid go? Are we sure she let her go with him or is that just waht they are saying. Are we sure she didn't know this guy?OMG

It was Friday and it's summer.
Not to be a bitch Koosh but who cares what her name was?

You rarely read a thread before posting, do you? lol
Just b/c the mother is already being punished and blaming herself doesn't mean we aren't allowed to point out a few places she could have made some better decisions.
Yikes its true. I see it and I post then I see a whole slew of messages.. sorry :-) ETa: what I mean is its on the app and I don't see the number of pages until I post.
Her mother was down on her luck from what I've gathered and shopping at a Dollor Store with her three daughters. The man who did this has a rap sheet going back over 30 years of targeting children came over and offered the mother a $100 gift card to use at Walmart for clothes and then convinced them to go with him to the store. He had been out of prison for only 3 weeks. His record includes impersonating a child welfare investigator and making threatening calls to a 9-year-old girl; attempting to lure a 13-year-old girl into his van and chasing her as she ran away; and trying to lure two girls into his van with pornographic magazines. Court records show his criminal history dates back at least to 1977,when he was arrested on a charge of lewd assault on a child. He was basically hunting for a child and targeted this girl.

I just can't sit here any longer and not pipe in with my 2 cents worth. this scum was a predator with 3 times more experience luring victims than this poor mother had being a parent. He was a pro, she was just like the rest of us, doing the best she could (I want to believe she was). if it had not been this child it would have been another. think about how many victims he had before he got caught. the legal system failed this little girl, not her mother. The only good that has come out of this is that this bastard will be in jail for the rest of his life, while that is little consolation to her loved ones who are grieving right now, he won't hurt any more children. may this child rest in peace, may her parents find peace, may this sick fuck rot in jail
What a beautiful little girl. This is just so heart breaking.
And on a flameworthy note I told my almost 10 year old daughter and 8 year old son about this event. I only left out the fact that he was a sexual predator. I left it at that he wanted to kill her. I told them how he befriended them and lured the girl and what ultimately happened to her (that she was killed by him).
I want to hear jack shit from the father criticizing the mother. You know he was a deadbeat and that's why they were left trying to take charity from this asshole.
