There is no requirement but they dangle all sorts of rewards in front of the girls that do sell cookies. I always find it annoying when co-workers basically leave a cookie order form in the break room and say to sign your name on the line if you want cookies.....I think that's cheating. The whole idea is to get the girls involved in the community, not have mom or dad peddle the cookies for them.
YES
My dad would never bring my cookie form to work with him, on principle, and I always thought it wasn't fair that all the other kids' parents did it. I had to WORK IT to earn that silver radio! LoL
in the troop that I run, no girl is required to sell cookies, nor is she required to work a booth. at the council level, the troop is only required to participate in cookie sales if they intend to do individual troop fund raising outside of cookie sales.
ie: we raffled off a quilt made by the girls as a fund raiser in addition to cookie sales.
This was the case in my troop when I was a GS. I'm guessing individual troop policies differ, but there's no official requirement to participate in ANY fundraising.
I don't think it's such a bad thing. I am super shy and introverted. But I still went to the local a&p with the girl scouts to show I would put myself out there to support a good cause. Maybe my dd was part of an exceptional troop but I felt like I was setting a good example by putting myself and my dd out there to support something we believed in. On that same note I buy several boxes from who ever asks. The girl scouts are one of the only groups I actually believe in. I guess my 70s self is shining through but I look forward to Girl Scout Camporee every year. IEPs and Disney be damned... Girl scouts gives girls community, purpose and inclusion. All for the price of some thin mints. Lol.
