If it makes you feel any better, I just called Delta to let them know I'll have a lap baby. They had to move our seats on one of the flights because there was another lap baby in front of us. I guess they don't want the babies to get in yelling contests.

Sometimes they also do that because of the oxygen masks and flotation devices--to make sure the babies will have one in case of an emergency.

I have to say that I gate checked my infant seat and when I got it back it was all banged up and covered in dirt. I didn't go and get a new one though. Regarding turbulence you will be fine! Those trans atlantic flights go up so high in the air you won't feel any turbulence.

So we're flying to Pennsylvania tomorrow with her on my lap. Gate checking her convertible. I'm more paranoid about her screaming and squirming to get down the whole time than getting hurt, and I'm actually pretty car seat fanatical.
She's also flown several other times and slept in the carrier on my chest all flight. She'll be FINE, Laura. Seriously, do not stress yourself this much over a bunch of pretentious, self righteous sanctimommies.

I love this! And I love you! (heart) (high5) (kiss)

Hmm. In a study prepared for the FAA, Department of Transportation researchers concluded that mandatory infant safety seats could have prevented at most only one infant death since 1978. All other infant fatalities in airline crashes occurred in sections of planes where no one survived.
The other day someone said their husband dropped the seat a little too hard on the ground and she was like oh I guess it's a crashed seat then, have to buy a new one. WTF?!! These people obviously have too much money. haha
OMG, I saw this the other day and was all, WTF?!?!?!?
We flew with Madison as a lap baby back in March and I did the same thing you are and started freaking the fuck out. Then I calmed down, we flew and she was fine. Technically, we did end up with an open seat beside us both ways but we had already *gasp* gate checked our infant seat.
I'll admit. They got to me too. We avoided flying for an upcoming trip and opted to drive for 12 hours instead because OMG it is so unsafe. I am feeling a bit more leveled now and I am regretting not just buying 2 seats and buying a Cosco seat at out destination.
It's funny because since statistically driving is the MOST dangerous "activity", i wonder if driving long distances with them in a carseat is actually more dangerous than flying with them in your lap!!
Faevantastic seriously though, I was not planning to but now I'm thinking maybe I will. Chances are with euros and their lax carseat rules I won't even be able to get one to RF her in so maybe best to bring my own after all.
She still have some room in her snugride 32 bucket seat which would be easier to transport around and could just be installed in the rental car with a belt and no base? Or I guess we could bring a base one as well.
Does this device you have accommodate all seats?
That wasn't just ANY baby... That was Heath Ledger and Michelle Williams' baby!
You should be able to install the bucket seat using seatbelt. The cart thingy is universal. It's called Go go Kidz Travelmate. If you're interested, I'll bring it on Sunday. I won't need it til the end of Oct.
ha! her name is also matilda! how perfect.
I asked hubby and he said it would be easier to just carry the bucket seat with us, but thank you for the offer! If I were travelling alone it would be very different but we also have MIL coming so there will be three adults to divvy up the stuff.
I'm thinking I'll gate check the infant seat but I am wondering now if we should buy a cheapo seat instead since the snugride 32 isn't cheap and I was planning to use it for the next baby as well!
