That's ridiculous. I was reading an interview of a participant once, and he said how he would drag his treadmill into a sauna and train in there. Why? Why would someone do this?! This goes past bad ass into straight up stupid territory.
Maybe their body temp gets so high that when they stop & it starts dropping quickly they get cold? Maybe to stop it from dropping too quickly and making it dangerous? I'm making all of this up & totally guessing.
I was following the Columbus Marathon's race director yesterday. They posted one pic of him and I just thought "you poor thing." He wrapped it up in just over 40 hrs. Why would you do this to yourself?
They sleep out there, right? Like, your support crew sets up camp for a couple of hours? I can't stay awake for 24 hours when I'm not running.
Have you stayed awake for 24 hour running before?!
I could guess they camp for a few hours along the way. My friend did Leadville 100 and I'm pretty sure her support crew camped at a few of the check points along the way.

No, no, no, no! I meant I can't do it when I'm not running, so definitely not when I'm exerting myself by running!

They finish on Mt Whitney putting them at about 14,000 feet.
And hell no to that race, ever. Extreme heat, massive elevation gain and a gajillion miles! Nope!
The heat index was around 105 here today and I thought I was going to choke out on my run at 5 a.m. I was sweating my ass off just before I got to the sidewalk and only did a paltry three miles, diverting my way through a park that had a few water fountains. Those people are crazy. I would die within the first ten feet.

Because of where I live, I do volunteering support at endurance events (ultrarunning, mostly). It takes a special kind of crazy to do these events, that's for sure. And if you ask any athlete why, they'll have a hundred different reasons, but they'll all sort of converge on "why not?"
It's a unique group of folks, but they're all really great people. I'd crew for any one of them, but I don't know any ultrarunners personally.

My husband is an ultra marathon runner who has completed several 100 miles ultras. I crew for him and while I may nap between aid stations while I wait for him, the runners traditionally do not!

omg this is my dream race. It's the race that I hope to one day do but I know it is pure craziness. (I even have the poster of the course framed about my fireplace )

Do you run ultras? You have to have finished 3 100 mile races to even be considered for a spot! (I'm sure you know that...just curious about you running background because I can't imagine wanting to run it!)
