I think the commercials for a Sunday noon football game are generally more family friendly than say Monday night football in prime time. Unless you're watching Sprout or Disney Junior or something, you have to assume that prime time commercials are NOT going to be geared toward children.
1. Yes, football (or any sports on tv) I would qualify as family. I don't need to see the new Saw 14 commercial during that. You KNOW families are going to be watching, just use common sense.
2. Two or three seasons ago, "The Dance Show" was just about DANCING. It was about good dancing and that was it. I'm uncomfortable that every dance is ending in a kiss. Why is that even necessary? Why can't' it just be about dancing. I'm aware that it falls on the prudish side of the spectrum and I'm okay with that. I'm not petitioning my congressman about it, I just find it awkward.
3. The Despicable Me 2 showing we went to was at 10 am.
4. Yes, this is real life. I know it's weird that people have different opinions on things. It's going to be okay.
teacup ...you should probably just keep your kids inside, all the time, with no tv at all. Especially not that Dancing smut.
This reminds me of my super fundie cousins, whose parents forbade them to watch anything but Disney movies until they were married and out of the house. They confiscated my Archie comics and Babysitters Club books when I stayed with them.

Except that true fundies will also forbid their children from watching The Little Mermaid (she's underdressed and rebellious) or The Lion King (soundtrack written by teh gays - you could catch it!) I wish I were kidding about this.

Don't forget witchcraft and magic in Snow White/Sleeping Beauty/Cinderella/etc
This is all just making me think of the time last year that H and I were watching some random sitcom with his parents, and his dad fast-forwarded through a very bland sex scene (the couple had just their heads sticking out of the covers and was kissing and having some pillow talk). Freaking LOL.
Is the new HG rated PG? I truly am clueless about that. If so, then I do think it's fair game to show at another PG movie. I'm not entirely sure how production companies decide which previews to show where (I'm assuming they consider target audience, etc), but as long as the rating is not "above" the movie you're watching, that's probably all they are concerned about ratings-wise. Perhaps it wasn't the best choice, but I think that's the trade-off you get when going to a movie--lack of control. Just like that thread the other day about obnoxious people in movie theaters; that's the trade-off I get when I choose to go instead of waiting and watching it at home.

Oh, they censored their Disney movies. But they had to watch, like, The Apple Dumpling Game and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. Old Disney movies. They were also Gothardites/ATI. They kidnapped me off to a Gothard indoctrination "camp" when I stayed with them when I was a kid and my dad hasn't spoken to his sister since. Crazycakes!

Allie carried her Ariel Barbie type doll over to my brother's house. It came back with a homemade dress and her hair in pigtails. I asked Allie about the dress. I thought she may have made it with my SIL. No. The doll was taken away for being under dressed. She used an old Tshirt to cover her up and sent it back. H and I died in laughter
my 8th grade social studies teacher let us watch spartacus when we were studying roman history. and she leapt in front of the screen when spartacus kissed a girl, and got all flustered when she couldn't figure out how to fast forward. gladiator scenes, by contrast, were a-okay.

I don't know if it's common knowledge because I don't talk about it much, but R&I are former fundies (he grew up that way, we both went to the college, the whole shebang.) I kid you not, I had my Lion King soundtrack TAKEN AWAY when I was in college - 20+ years old - because the school determined that the music was offensive because some of it was written by Elton John. I was a fundie at the time, but I was still all ^o) about it.

I don't know why I'm bothering to clarify more, because it's just going to add more fuel to your fire, but okay: I don't let my kids watch So You Think You Can Dance. We do, however, have football on because I'm a football widow. We don't watch hockey, usually, and if I could keep my precious snowflakes in a bubble forever, I would ... but I can't and I'm trying to be okay with that.
We're not fundies. We're not helicopters. We're good parents trying to do the best we can, just like every other parent here.

What made you change?
I/we had a wake up call senior year regarding how they really treat people - particularly women and gays. So we took a few steps back and really looked at the whole situation and thought "this is messed up." Over the past 10 years or so, other things have come to light which have caused us to further separate from the whole movement. I could go into deep detail, but to be honest, there are parts of it I'm just trying to let go and forget about. Honestly, we still identify as Christians, but we're so far removed from those days it's unbelievable. R's parents are still fundie, though.

If I was younger when it came out, my mom would not have let me read Harry Potter because it was about magic. As we all know, magic is the Devil's plaything.
Our previews for Despicable Me 2 were also pretty freaking scary for little kids. I did not think to complain. DH and I just felt stupid for not being prepared for the nightmare-inducing previews.
I guess my kid isn't sensitive. She watched Despicable Me 2 twice and loves watching the previews. She also loved Turbo and she going to see Smurfs 2 this weekend. As long as the previews are PG I don't care really.

I heard sermons against it in college and how J.K. Rowling was trying to indoctrinate young people into wiccanism. Um. Yeah, ok. This from the same people that sold the Lord of the Rings trilogy in the school bookstore. Of course, they also have magic, but its ok because they're allegorical and were written by Tolkien, who was a good christian. Or something like that.

Right? I could never get a straight answer from anyone why Harry Potter = bad but LOTR and The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe were good. They're all three about good vs. evil and the consequences of the choices you make.

I'm going to guess the actual, correct answer here (although no one in fundyism will ever admit to it) is that a) Harry Potter was/is wildly popular and b) J.K. Rowling is female. Tolkien and Lewis were male and therefore had everyone's best interests at heart, see.
Her teacup you're brand spanking new here. Welcome hoe did you find us?
Also FTR Despicable Me is wall to wall weaponry, explosions etc. It just hapoens to be animated.
This is point I was going to make. There was a ton of violence in this movie. So, it is okay if it is animated, but heaven forbid your little ones be exposed to non-animated violence? ^o)
My kid didn't even flinch during the previews, but i don't shelter her and try to keep her in a bubble. The real world is out there, and growing up sheltered and over protected doesn't do you or anyone else any favors in the long run. That probably makes me a terrible mother though.
