I'll ask DH about hardware.
The bath like that is my idea. I like the idea of each use in its own space. It has always grossed me out that places for waste (toilets) and next to spaces to get clean (baths). Leaving the sinks in a common area allows all of us to use the same bath, some brushing teeth, someone on the toilet, and someone taking a shower.
DH and I both grew up with one family bath for our families of 6 & 5. I've never wanted a master bath all my own. Another toilet and shower to clean. Ugh.
My friends are likely building a very similar house. Probably more standard with closets and a master bath, but modern.
As far as the cabinets, it's not something we have priced, but in my experience the cost difference is substantial. I just cant justify the cost for solid wood box interiors. The doors and side panels? Maybe we will DIY our own just to get a custom look. But really we need to cost the whole thing out.
i love so much about this house. it's like you crawled inside my brain and picked out 3-4 of the most important things to me.
1) i like little bedrooms that are for sleeping only. we don't hang out there, kids don't extensive play space there, we have family rooms for that. 2) i don't need a master bath. h and i both lived in 1 bath houses growing up and never minded it. (granted it's far more impressive for his family of 12 than my family of 3!) 3) i hate, hate, hate excess storage space. it just encourages the collection of useless stuff. i want just enough storage to cover the ugly things (suitcases, etc.) and the rest can be visible. make it pretty, functional, and minimal. 4. completely open kitchen/dining/living. i want all one big room. furniture separates and designates the spaces.
i cannot wait to see this come together! it's going to be amazing.
I am skimming quickly, but I love love love that playroom idea, and think it could transition well to older kids too. Good sharing space but also some privacy.
I really love the concept you are going after, and I find myself gravitating more and more to a modern feel with things.
Suggestion, move the woodstove and incorporate it into the kitchen. My brother has one in his kitchen and actually uses it for the majority of his cooking as well. The way its situated its in the center of the house so it provides a ton of heat. The house is an original sears and roebuck two story home and it was designed to be closed down to one story in the winter and the bedrooms moved to the room that the wood stove was in so there was never any whole home heating / cooling put in. Re-positioning the wood stove to the center allows it to heat the entire house well.

I've never seen that before! The unit that we are thinking of swivels, so we could direct it to the deck if we wanted to. I wonder if there is greater heat loss with the one you show because it is letting the top get hot?
