I need to get mine sharpened but apparently it's not so easy to find someone to do this. There's a knife sharpening truck that goes around my neighborhood on Sundays but I'm not always around, or he goes by too fast.

We have Cutco knives, so a Cutco rep comes to our house and sharpens them. I know the butcher at my grocery store sharpens knives, and the local kitchen store.
I'm actually reading a book called Consider the Fork, which is a history of kitchen tools and I just got to the knife section. It's really interesting.
I haven't but need to. I did see a kitchen store in my area with a sign saying they sharpen knives, so I like the other's suggestion of a kitchen place.
Oh, the butcher is a good idea too! Except I wonder if I'd have to go to the kosher butcher....I'd have to ask the rabbi about that actually.
For some reason, this amuses me immensely. Our knives aren't the greatest, so I just sharpen them myself. If and when we invest in really nice knives, I'll leave it to a professional.
Definitely! There's nothing that makes cooking better and more enjoyable (IMHO) than a nice sharp knife. We have Wustohf knives (for meat) and a big Henkels chef's knife for dairy. I love my knives.
When I started culinary school, the first thing they said was, "Never get Cutco knives." Are they good knives, ladies?
Snap! Well, I'm not particularly picky about my knives, but they are definitely better than the Kitchen Aid ones I had before. Of course I don't cut meat or anything, so I don't know how they do with that.

Ahhhhh, I made a post and damn 502 ate it!
My dad is a butcher. Growing up, we didn't have regular steak knives. We had big meat knives that had been sharpened so much that they had blades the size of steak knives with GIANT handles.
I don't sharpen my kinves. I use a steel before each use, but that's not sharpening. I only have 2, though. They need it. I should ask my dad.

I didn't go to culinary school, but I remember being told by my grandma when I was younger, "knives should be German, Dutch ovens and rolling pins should be French." For some reason that stuck with me and I have German knives and a Le Creuset Dutch oven.

Lol! If I didn't know you, I'd think "I love my knives" is a pretty strange statement! I'm not sure what we have, but I'll definitely have to look into getting them sharpened.

It's 520 and I'm so freaking over that shiz. It's been happening to me all the time!
I usually do it myself. Unless I can convince my friend, who's a chef, to do it for me. I wish I had a Sur la Table near by, not just for the knife sharpening!

I am in love with my Henkels Chef knife and santoku! A good knife makes such a difference!
i get them sharpened at the butcher at our grocery store. You should check if your kosher butcher sharpens them.

::tiptoeing through this thread for fear of getting cut::
We have crappy knives. I got a few "good" knives for my wedding, but let's face it. They're still crappy. And our butcher block was a gift to my parents from Service Merchandise when I was a kid. And I just now found out that the company still exists, though it left the mall many many many moons ago. I'm jealous of your sharp knives.

I have Henkels and no, I have yet to sharpen them but they badly need it. I am actually planning on sending them back because they have started to rust and they are apparently rust proof, lol. But the Henkel guy said that they don't sharpen them. I'm hoping they will just send me a brand new sharp set!

My mom has them and my brother fight over who gets them when she dies? Yep real grown up. They are just nicer than what I have (Pampered Chef knives).

They will. I used to work at a non-chain department store and the Henckle rep was always there exchanging knives. We also had a knife sharpening guy who came in and did blades, shears, and knives.
So that's another angle. If you have a local hardware store, they probably have a "knife guy". Also, your hairdresser probably knows one. All hairdressers have a "shear guy" who sharpens their scissors. It's the same as the "knife guy".
