I signed my mortgage 10 years before signing my marriage license. He also owned a house. Before that, we'd both rented apartments. We've never lived in his house (and never will). He moved in with me, and we rent out his house. I might retire here (still don't know). If I sell, it won't be because I want more room. There's only two of us. I hate huge houses.

H's bank referred him to a loan officer at a mortgage company and he has made a few suggestions to get H's credit up high enough that we can be approved for a loan. He said it could take a couple months, so we'll wait that out. If it doesn't work, we might have to look into a credit specialist.
Did your sister's bf hire a local person? Or is it someone that H could hire?
Thanks for your help![/quote]
It was someone local and I'm in the Chicago area but I will see him Friday and ask him if it could be done over the phone/thru emails.

We own a duplex and live in one side, rent out the other.
We actually have a house under contract right now, inspection is this weekend so hopefully nothing too bad will pop up.
DH bought several rent houses, a duplex, and a fourplex before we got married so we have yet to live in a house where we don't share a wall. If we get the house we have under contract, it'll be our home for at least 5 years. We'll either sell or lease it and then move on to a bigger house or start to build our own. We haven't talked about where we want to retire, but I'm pretty sure it won't be in this town.

I think you should discuss retiring to the Austin area, which is our plan.
We own our home, closed on it 2 weeks after our wedding. It will be 3 years this August. We had rented apartments before then.
Have not purchased more than one.
Do not plan to retire here. I don't expect anything bigger/better but just in a different city. Our hearts belong in the hill country so we both have hopes to pick up and relocate there at some point after the H's teacher retirement fund kicks in.

I don't think I'll ever get DH to Austin. I think he'd consider Lake LBJ or something like that, though.

Georgetown, Round Rock, Marble Falls... we are open to all the surrounding areas and not just Austin. Pick the one you like best (I bet it's Round Rock) and try some gentle persuasion. We have plenty of years to ingrain in his brain that hill country is where we should be.

My hardhead won't budge. It's really frustrating! I guess we have plenty of time to work on it, though.
