I like the way the U looks better, so I'd probably go with that for a middle name. If it was the primary name (i.e. that's what he's going to be called), I'd probably go with W since that's the more common spelling.
I cringe at other because there was a creepy guy named this that used to watch from the woods by our high school, but he was harmless. I prefer the spelling Lawrence though.

My dad spells it with a U. I was always told that was the British spelling (note - he is not British), but I have no idea if that has any basis in truth. And he's always gone by Larry.
Personally I dislike the name no matter how you spell it but H spells it Laurance. He is named after his dad who was named after his grandmother (H's great grandmother). No one ever spells it correctly, we get it fixed on something and then they change it back because they figured it can't be right spelled that way. Such a nuisance and why DS is NOT named after H.
