I think our school supplies go into a community pot which makes it really easy. We had to buy glue sticks, elmers glue, markers, pencils, crayons and that was about it. Oh and two boxes of kleenexs.
I was a little annoyed when we got the school supply list on Friday and saw that his teacher doesn't want backpacks and would rather they have tote bags. I had already purchased him a backpack and he took the tags off, so I couldn't return it. I sent him to school with it today until we can get a tote bag, but DH told me that the bags that the other kids had were basically "man purses" and not much smaller than DS's backpack. The whole point of the teacher requesting tote bags was because classroom space is limited, so I am not sure what she is wanting. I guess I will find out today when DS gets hom from school.
Oh, and the public school's dress code in the county I live in requires shorts to be down to the mid-calf. It was nearly impossible to find any that meet that guideline. Everything was too short and I went to pretty much every store in the area. I guess I will have to order online.

So basically, no shorts at all? They have to wear pants or capris?
Please, parents out there, remember that double parking to let little precious out of the car 5 feet closer to the door is a dangerous traffic hazard.
It also annoys me as we'll as the long line of cars behind me that actually extends around the corner.
Additionally, if little precious needs to get into the trunk to get out his or her instrument (thus blocking traffic for even longer), don't complain when you are shanked by an angry mob

They can wear these:
But, I couldn't find anything like that where I live. American Eagle had two pairs left, but they were way too big for her.

Where I live we call that style of shorts "pants"
hanna Anderson carries a lot of that style/length for boys. They are nice (but $$$)
Did DD's school supply list shopping today. On that list was a package of black, fine point Sharpies. I did not buy them. 5 year olds do not need black sharpies that do not wash out of clothes.

One shoulder tote bags are really bad for kids backs. Keep the backpack.
my daughter got a few outfits from Target, a pair of cowboy boots from target, a pair of sneakers and some hair accessories and I spent 250 UGH. My son got a patriots jersey and sneakers and a few pairs of pants and a few shirts. about 200.
Now add in backpacks and supplies and that is another 125 OMG they are making me go broke. At least I don't have to pay for any daycare or afterschool care for DD. Still have DS2's daycare man.. this shits expensive yo

I'm returning to school, so I'm all ready to just get the book buying done! EXCEPT MY BOOKSTORE DOESN'T CARRY TWO OF MY BOOKS. These two books comprise the whole list of one class, for which the teacher was assigned only a week or two ago. So, I'm just going to wait until the first day and see what is up with all that, because I have a feeling there is a reason we can't buy those specific books yet. Still, super annoying!

They are probably for the teacher's use.
Is that common? Don't they get a budget for their own supplies? Seems weird that they have 15-20 kids each bring in a package of Sharpies.

That is common here. Teachers often have to pay for supplies out of their own pockets for supplies.
The oddest thing I've had to send in was tennis balls. I didn't know why they wanted them, but later found out that they put them on the legs of the chairs so they wouldn't scrape the floor.

Interesting. That's the only thing on the list that seemed non-kid. Everything else was paper, pencils, crayons, eraser, glue stick and such.

DD had to have a tote bag in kindergarten. They told us well in advance (when we went to the orientation in January), but it was still annoying. They said it was because they had these reading bags they would regularly take in and out of bags and it took way too much time with zipping and unzipping backpacks. I didn't have to worry about the bag being bad for her back because I was always the one carrying it. I'm glad she's going into first grade where she can use a backpack.

I'm not a parent, but I'm a teacher. Can I share an annoyance? I'm annoyed that our students can switch their schedules around this entire week, so I don't have a set roster and can't administer pre-tests or anything super important yet because they'll be adding/dropping. They let them switch for reasons like "I want to have the same lunch period as my friend." RAGE!
I don't know why this always surprises me, but every year I am AMAZED at how many parents register their kids the first day of school. I avoided the front office all day. Cluster fuck.
E is in preschool - the toddler class, and he's supposed to have inside shoes, too.
The teacher recommended slippers. He's also supposed to have rain boots and a rain coat. No other supplies are needed except the usual extra diapers, wipes and a change of clothing.

Both of my kids (3k and 5k) have sharpies on their list. Along with Clorox wipes, paper plates, postage stamps, paper towel, hand soap, toilet paper, and duck tape. We live in a poor district, so I'm sure it's all supplies the teachers need. Unless they're going to have the kids tape each other to the wall.

I teach kinder and I go through sharpies like nobody's business. Everything in kinder needs to be labeled, the word walls, writing on sentence strips, making anchor charts. I take all the black markers out of the kids boxes and hide them in my desk like a squirrel with nuts.

And that's why our kindergarten teachers have the kids hang up coats and unzip backpacks first thing in the AM and then the bags are open all day.
