I still think there's a whole lot more to this story than Starbucks choosing to let an employee go hungry. We don't know anything about this guy or the circumstances surrounding his firing, other than what he tells the media.
Oh, I don't think this guy is completely innocent. I just this this particular incident seems bad. It's also not like HR can just release his employee file to the media either.
That's exactly my point. Everyone seems awfully eager to give hair pets to this one guy--about whom we know nothing--and demonize a company that, considering its size and the kind of business it is, has a track record of being pretty decent to its employees. All I'm saying is that it doesn't make any sense and I need a lot more information before I can be all "Team Fired Dude!"
Yep, this was always the reason when I worked in places with food. When I worked at a movie theatre, we would have to write off boxes of candy with ripped boxes that were, otherwise, perfectly fine. We weren't allowed to eat any, though (although lots of "sneaking" of this food happened, anyway)
Yeah, this sneaking could be solved pretty easily, actually. I've worked with 3 Subways in different locations and all of them have had the same policy,
1 free 6" sub for 2+ hours 1 free 12" for 5+ hours 1 free bag of chips or two cookies per shift
Actually, one I worked with a few years ago implemented this after I had been working there for a few months, their "food waste" costs went down pretty significantly. I think this has a lot to do with their employees not being constantly in a state of hunger and sneaking as much food as possible during their shift. I'm certain this policy is also a weak attempt to assuage some guilt for paying a shit wage. lol.
Did you get the "we're sorry, here's one on us" card thingy from them?
No, cause I didn't realize it was screwed up until I sat down at my desk across town from where I picked it up.
honestly? Tell them next time. I got a "we're sorry" card when I did that. All I said was something like "can you make sure (insert issue here) is on that because I ended up with (insert issue here) last time.
"Not gonna lie; I kind of keep expecting you to post one day that you threw down on someone who clearly had no idea that today was NOT THEIR DAY." ~dontcallmeshirley
Starbucks in on my shit list right now because online it said that pumpkin spice lattes were available now, people were tweeting that they were having them, and I went to the Starbucks near me, and NOPE, NOT UNTIL NEXT WEEK.
I love all things pumpkin, but cannot have a PSL until it's below 70 degrees outside.
My H used to work for Starbucks. At one point, they were giving the homeless guys in the alley the expired food. Their district manager caught them and said she would fire all of them if they didn't stop. Lovely, no?
Also, he was working full time as a shift manager, and we were still in need of food stamps. With me working full time as well. Good times! Starbucks sucks.
The manager at a McDonalds near me was giving leftover food to a homeless guy when they closed at night. He started coming in earlier and earlier asking for food. Sometimes you try to help and it backfires.

I get the first one as soon as I hear they're out, and then not have one until it's in the 60s.
Something about knowing they're available makes me want one.
I love the peppermint mochas--which a sbux person kindly informed me I could order all year long, LOL--but for some reason, I only order them around the holidays.
I find it really hard to believe that his manager couldn't have looked the other way if she wanted to.
We're never going to get the whole story--all we know is what the fired employee says--the company itself will never publicly say if there were other issues at play. I half-suspect that the spokesperson saying that it's possible for this kind of offense to end in firing IF it were part of a larger pattern of problems is their way of saying, "dude was a hot mess, but we can't talk about that, sooooo..."
I agree. I tend to think that it's either a. a really crappy manager who's on a power-trip and used this as an excuse to fire the guy when she easily could have looked the other way on something that wasn't harming anyone or b. this guy had had a long line of problems, a history of being a crappy employee, and this was just the last straw.

Yeah, they're good about stuff. I once dropped mine in the parking lot getting into my car, went back in for another, and they comped me.

I need to hear the other side to the story. Sounds to me like a straw that broke the camel's back situation. I used to work for S'bux and they were a pretty reasonable company to work for, so my guess is the guy wasn't the great employee he was claiming to be and they were able to find a solid reason to fire him so they took it.
