Snap chat is different than texts, you only see the image for 5 seconds, so it's hard for parents to monitor it as nothing is saved. Tread carefully with where you lay blame, there may be some truth to the story.
Pictures aren't always erased, the receiver has the ability to screencap anything that is sent to them and save the image. Most of the time the sender is notified in the event that this happens but there are ways around this. Also this is technology and the internet, depending on how Snapchat organizes the data it might not be "deleted" when those 5 seconds expire.
Also phone records would show that multimedia messages were being sent from one person to another, so they can tell that something was being transferred.
Teens and technology don't mix. Man,social media and half my adult friends don't mix. I can totally see snapchat being the devil. That sucks what your going through and sucks for the teens as well. My kids are using pagers!
The executive sous chef where I work is getting fired because of inappropriate snap chat photos he's been sending to a server.
There's more to the story, but the photos are what are getting him fired in the end...
I don't think people realize they can get in trouble with snap chat, even though the photos are "erased".
If the photos are erased, how is there "proof." Doesn't it become a he said/she said?
Not disagreeing, just wondering what the legalities of a terminationbasedon something that self erases would be.
You can still see when he sent the message. He's a dumb ass and told everyone what he sent (a picture of his butt hole). There's more to the firing than just this, but it was the icing on the cake.
The person who receives the photo can still take a screen shot of the image.
I did not think there was worse then guys sending pictures of their junk. I was wrong. Dear lord what is wring with people. And where can I buy an island to live with my daughter until she's 50?

We had a problem with DD and her BFF getting harassed last year on KIK. The school said they couldn't do anything about it and the cops said the same thing because the messages are deleted from the servers at KIK right after the message is seen. So now she just doesn't use it. She snap chats but only with approved people and luckily she knows to NEVER EVER send any naked photos of herself to anyone. After the whole KIK thing, the school found out that a couple 7th grade girls had been sending nudes to a few guys and of course those got around.
A coworker and I were talking this morning about how apps like Snap Chat are degrading relationships in younger generations. This coworker has a sister who is in her late teens and told me she sees it first hand through the sister. Relationships are entirely based on the physical. You get 5 seconds to see someone and judge them on that.
It's gross and scary. My kids will have this until they can afford their own cell phone bill.
How realistic is it to say that my children will never have smartphones? Not very, is it? It looks like middle school is when kids get phones around here.
I always said the same. Unfortunately, the schools here require either a smart phone, laptop, or tablet starting in jr. high. DD failed a quiz last year because she didn't have a device. We finally got her an ipohone for her 13th birthday.

What? That's ridiculous. What if you cannot afford it?
No reason for a teenager to have a smartphone. They can get a phone to call and text people, but internet access is not necessary.
Family computer all the way!
Once Em is old enough I'll be monitoring her computer/internet usage!
There are so many parental controls out there though to block apps and internet things. However, there are a lot of kids who are smarter than their parents about technology and know how to get around the blocks. :/

IF (and that would be VERY few people in our area of the district) you can't afford one, they have programs where the schools issue laptops for the year. They regularly have homework that requires the use of a computer and the internet. We have had to do power point presentations and even creat blogs. Also, there is a new program here that I just heard about where if the kid qualifies for free or reduced lunch, comcast will supply internet to their homes, I think maybe for free just limited access.

this is the case in our school district as well
This is also the case here. Both for the devices in class and the free internet.
