Well, it’s official. I have a torn meniscus. I saw the sports ortho knee specialist today. I should take comfort that he is widely regarded as being really good and is the ortho for the Atlanta Falcons. The MRI clearly showed a large meniscus tear. It also showed inflammation on the patellar tendon and possibly something on the back of the tendon. The PT and doctor were both right in the diagnosis! I have two things going on. Dr. K is going to take out the torn meniscus and will take a look at the tendon since he’s already in there. Most likely he said he’ll scrape off the inflammation and leave it to heal on its own. If all goes according to plan I’ll be back on the trainer in a week, road bike in 2 weeks, and back to cyclocross racing in 3-4 weeks. I will probably only miss 1-2 races and will be fine by my favorite races!
Update: The surgery is already scheduled for next Wed. The knee doc is known as one of the best in the area. I'm in good hands!
I will only have to be out of work for a day or two. No crutches, and PT twice a week for a few weeks afterwards.

Oh man, that sucks!! I'm so sorry to hear that. But that is awesome that you can get surgery done so quickly, and that the recovery should (knock on wood) be quick!
Holy crap Sadle! I'm sorry to hear that you need surgery, but glad to hear that you have a great doctor. I hope everything goes well and that you heal up quickly.
Oh no! I'm so sorry to hear that. I had a bad feeling it was your meniscus after reading your other post. The good news is that most orthopedic surgeons and PTs highly encourage the stationary bike ASAP after surgery so you will hopefully be back on track in no time!
ETA: I'll also keep you in my Ts&Ps that nothing else will show up when they get in there. Not to scare you or anything, but I had similar expectations with my first meniscus surgery and was out much longer due to the surprising find of a discoid meniscus. I am not in any way suggesting that could happen, but simply sharing that it is wonderful to have a strong plan, but important to remember that anything can happen and don't beat yourself up if things don't go exactly how you plan. ((I realize this is completely unsolicited advice, but would be remiss not to share it after having meniscus surgery on each of my knees)). I share because I care.
Well dang it . I'm glad you at least have a plan of action. I hope things go as smoothly as possible. I'll be anxious to hear you aw about being back to 100% !!
Sorry to hear of the injury. It sounds like you have a great action plan and are trusting of those helping you which is really important. Speedy and healthy recovery!
