we have to have a landline for church, otherwise we would totally cut it. my only concern would be how often i use the landline to make my cell ring when i can't find it between the couch cushions.
You can go online and do this. Either dial with google voice, or sites like Icantfindmyphone.com
We have never had a home phone and have no need for it. Everyone has both our numbers and can find us when needed.
I had a friend transfer her home phone number to an extra line on her cell phone plan so she could keep the number and had an extra phone in the house. It was cheaper than the landline phone plan she had.

I don't have a landline, but in my state you can still use a landline to call 911 even without phone service, so I have a phone in my bathroom of all places. Just in case.
We keep a landline because my cell phones are through my office, and so an emergency call would show my office address to 911, not my home address. I really like it that if I call 911 from my house, emergency people can find me even if I can't talk. Plus, I don't keep my cell phone on me all the time, it's usually in my purse, and in an emergency I don't want to be looking through my purse to find the damn thing.
The 911 issue is the only draw back for me. I keep my cell on me at all times, same with H. But if we go on a date night, I feel like I would like that added security for the sitter to be able to call from the landline
grr
Just sign up for smart 911. If you call 911 from your cell all of your personal information comes up. When we use a sitter we make sure that they have a phone.

I keep considering ditching it, but I keep it because I worry about my kids needing it. My H travels a ton, so it's just me most of the time. I worry about what my 5yo would do if I was unconscious or hurt in some way and unable to use the phone. My cell is always somewhere or another and sometimes not well charged. I don't want him to have to search for my phone to call 911 if he has to. That is a very outside chance, I know, but I guess that is just my own particular little mommy paranoia/irrational fear thing.

The one time I used to miss my landline is when H isn't home and I can't find my cell and I want to call it. But then I started using findmyiphone on icloud. No regrets.

We ditched ours about a year ago. So far, everything is fine and dandy. We have good cellphone service in our house and we have a load of minutes.
It did suck when we had an emergency and had to call 911. It took me about a minute to find a cellphone because I was panicking. At least the landline phones stay in one spot. Nowadays, we keep our cellphones nearby, like on the coffee table when we're in the living room, kitchen counter when I'm cooking, bedside table when we go to bed.
We hadn't had one in years but when we switched to Verizon, the package we got included phone so we have one plugged in our kitchen. The only time it ever rings is telemarketers and political calls. We just keep the ringer off at this point.

My DH refuses to give up the landline but we only pay like $20/mo as a part of our cable package.
Our oldest DD has a landline because the children wouldn't be able to figure out how to dial 911 on her smartphone because 1. it's locked, and 2. you have to press the dialer key to bring up the dial pad and press the send button. A landline is much easier.
