As much as it kills me that we are putting our soldiers in danger's way, I do feel something has to be done. The world can't turn the other way while babies and children and innocents are being gassed and attacked. I hate that it always has to be the U.S.A. but I think that's part of the responsibility of being one of the world leaders.
FTR: I will admit I haven't followed the Syria stuff very closely because it makes me sick to my stomach and my hormones can't take it right now.

NPR has been talking about it since ot started. In 2011? It's weird that it's only now an issue that's getting any attention. Babies have been being massacred for years.

Is he saying it's going to happen, as in, yes, he's ordering it? I'm not watching the speech, but I got from the live blog on CNN that he said he's taking it to Congress. I thought this was just him making his case to the American people in order to sway Congress.

I believe in late August of this year chemical weapons were first used. I think that is the difference maker in Obama seeking action now.

If we are to do this on basis of international war crimes, I wish more countries other than just France were participating. In my mind, France is only getting involved because of their prior colonial history, which I actually side eye greatly. Russia is likely playing games with us.
I hate hearing of children and innocent people being gassed with sarin. That should not go on. At the same time, I feel our intervention carries a huge possibility of creating even more severe upheaval/ instability in the region.

I think it was unclear at first that he was going to use diplomacy and consider the Russian proposals at first, but it did solidify that if Congress fails to vote in favor of strikes and that this is a stall tactic, he will do it himself. I agree for diplomacy, and I still don't think he'll ever get the House to vote for military strikes.
This is an incredibly difficult position to be in. As a leader. As a democrat. As a humanitarian. He's trying to be as assertive as possible without being rash.

Congress won't decide anything. By the time they come to a resolution, WWIII will have started or Russia will have the weapons. So there will be nothing to decide.

Is diplomacy giving their chemical weopons to russia? I don't see how that is solving the problem we're trying to solve. What am I missing?
Putin offered this solution up yesterday and then the Administration backed off a bit in terms of military action with this diplomatic " olive branch". It remains to be seen. Putin has his own ego at stake here. Now he looks like the biggest big shot in the room. It's such a clusterfuck. I'm really not impressed with the status of our foreign policy at the moment.

I believe we as human beings have a moral imperative to protect civilians from attacks like Assad's. I do hope, wish and pray that we can successfully do so with diplomacy.

The Russians are spear heading a convention in which Assad has admitted to the possession of chemical weapons, turn them over, and agree to prohibit their use in the future. It would also allow UN inspectors to investigate it after the fact. Many are worried that this is a stall tactic and will fall through, only to allow Assad to remain in power because he is allied with Russia. Russia has a stake in Assad winning and controlling e civil war in Syria. They also tried similar proposals in the past before the tart of Operation Desert Storm with poor results.
I've been reading lots of Syria for Dummies type websites.
I've been talking a lot to my friend who's writing her dissertation on failed nation states (like Syria) and has been quoted on the BBC and written articles on failed nation states. She doesn't think we should strike. I still do.

This is where I'm conflicted, because the soft heart in me says, '"Yes, protect the innocents; go in and stop the attacks," while the pragmatist in me says, "Why them? Why now? Why not protect the civilians in the Sudan? In North Korea?"
