I'm watching Ellen instead of working on my rounds presentation. Celine Dion is a guest. She mentioned recently having twins (where was I that I missed this?) so I went on Wikipedia because I was curious about her age.
Wiki blurb: Dion first met her husband and manager, René Angélil in 1980, when she was 12 and he was 38, after she and her mother sent him a demo tape of a song they had written. They began a relationship in 1987, and became engaged in 1991. They married on 17 December 1994, at the Notre-Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec. On 5 January 2000, Dion and Angelil renewed their wedding vows in Las Vegas.
In May 2000, Dion had two small operations at a fertility clinic in New York to improve her chances of conceiving, after deciding to use in-vitro fertilisation after years of failed attempts to conceive. Their first son, René-Charles Angelil, was born on 25 January 2001. In May 2010, Angelil announced that Dion was 14 weeks pregnant with twins after a sixth treatment of in-vitro fertilisation. On Saturday, 23 October 2010, at 11:11 and 11:12 am respectively, at St. Mary's Medical Center in West Palm Beach, Florida, Dion, by Caesarean section, gave birth to two healthy fraternal twins.[276] The twins were named Eddy, after Dion's favorite Algerian songwriter Eddy Marnay who also produced Dion's first five albums, and Nelson, after former South African President Nelson Mandela.[277] Dion appeared with her newborn sons on the cover of the 9 December 2010 issue of the Canadian edition of Hello! magazine.[278]
Highlights:
They "started" dating when she was 19 and he was 45. They met when she was 12...
She is now as old as he was when they began dating in 1987.
He was 68 when their twins were born in 2010! Can you imagine dropping off your child for his first day of preschool at the age of 71?

Lol, maybe this is a generational thing. I think you were probably too young when she first became popular to pick up on the media reports of the details of the relationship.
But, um, good for them on their long relationship?
Also, I get a little overly sensitive because we plan to have children when my husband is in his 40s, but hey, it's better than being in your 60s?
She talked about it on "Behind the Music" several years ago ... something about how Rene would always kiss her goodbye on the cheek when she was underage, and then once she was 18 he gave her a "different kind of kiss" one day

being in your forties SO different to me than pushing 70. A couple I nannied for were in their forties and I swear they had more energy than I did.

I knew all of this *except* the fact that they met when she was 12. That leads me to believe he had the hots for a child and was lying in wait until she was legal. Gross.

My bubble is bursting. I BELTED out My Heart Will Go On as a 7-year-old.*
*Probably shouldn't have been able to watch that movie. My parents did make me close my eyes for the drawing scene.
I remember turning to my mom to ask what a one-legged prostitute was. She told me to ask me dad lol.
I distinctly remember my parents coming home with the DVD all excited. They made me stop halfway through because it was a school night. I almost had a meltdown, lol.
**Just realized this must have been VHS. I'm pretty sure we didn't have a DVD player then.
I agree. I thought she looked ~50, which is why I was interested in finding her age to begin with.
It must be true though - I don't think they would have lied about her age (to make her younger than she is) given the fact that she was dating her very old manager and it would have made it look worse.

EW. See? He was waiting. Good lord.
Also, what is the gif in your sig?
The gif is Sweet Dee from It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. She tried to be a stand-up comedian and kept getting the dry heaves on stage because she was so nervous
(I'm mad that I don't have Channel FXX and can't watch the new episodes, grrr. You can watch seasons 1-7 on Netflix.)
Yes. I remember their wedding, and it was definitely gossip fodder. As I remember it, though, Mariah Carey's relationship with Tommy Mottola was talked about more, even though it was at least a little bit less creepy.
And speaking of creeps, how has R. Kelly remained popular all these years, despite his sicko tendencies?

I would have guessed she was in her 40s during the My Heart Will Go On era! But she must have been 30 back then. Yikes.
I mean, I don't see wrinkles or whatever, but that's a very mature look for 30.

She's always been more "mature" looking than her peers. I think that's the actual reason her relationship was kind of gossiped about, but Mariah Carey's was a much bigger deal. I mean, they were pretty much equally popular ca. 1993, and only a couple years apart in age, but Celine looked and acted older than Mariah, so I think people bought that her relationship was "true love" whereas they thought Carey/Mottola's was just a bimbo hooking up with her producer.
And I remember this all clearly, because I was a DIE-HARD Mariah fan at the time.
I knew this. I don't find it weird/creepy. Probably because they are still together, so it's not like he has a history of doing it with others.
As far as his age, well, he can afford to have a kid in his 70s. It's not like he's the one waking up in the middle of the night, or even driving them to school. So...I guess he can afford to be a little more hands off.
It is less creepy after they've been together for 25+ years
I think the age gap matters less with age, but the fact that he met his wife when she was 12 and he was 38 and apparently proceeded to wait in the wings until she reached legal age will never, ever stop being creepy.

I know I will probably offend a huge number of people, but I know a dating couple who has known each other since first grade, and my reaction is kind of... ugh, you knew each other in your awkward stages! I can't imagine anyone I met at age 12 was attracted to my shiny face and frizzy hair. And I'm glad my husband didn't experience that with me.

I met my husband at 18 and I'm horrified that he knew me at such an awkward phase!
